Coweta got the slight advantage after one quarter 21-17. The game was more of the same in the second quarter. Coweta could not seem to find an answer for Conner Calavan though as Fort Gibson took the 38-34 lead into the half. The third quarter was even as both teams were able slow down the offenses and play tighter defense. Fort Gibson led after three quarters 50-47. Fort Gibson held onto the lead thanks to good free throw shooting in the fourth. They won the game 63-53.
Takeaways
Missed Opportunities
The gameplan was simple for Coweta. All they wanted to do was either stop Conner Calavan or at least slow him down. However, that did not work for Coweta as Calavan came out on fire. The Coweta Tigers could not find a way to keep him out of the score column. When Coweta could slow down Calavan that is when they had their opportunities to grab control of the game. Coweta switched up who they had guarding him in the third quarter and it slowed him down but left other Fort Gibson players open to be able to knock down shots.
The Moneyball
Both teams in this one were thriving off the money ball. Both teams had very talented shooters all over their roster and it showed as they were both nailing their threes. Coweta hit a game high nine three pointers throughout the game, but it was Fort Gibson who pulled out the game with 7 threes and and 16 hit free throws.
Players to Know
Conner Calavan 2020 Fort Gibson Guard
Calavan showed his most dominant performance of the tournament in this consolation championship game. He was on fire and he could not seem to miss. Coweta was throwing different defenders at him all night long trying to disrupt his rhythm. They even would send a double teams his way and then Conner would find his teammates for open looks. Calavan finished the game with the game high of 25 points.
Seth Anderson 2020 Coweta Guard
Anderson was keyed on for most of the night and in the first quarter he even was played as the one in a box and one. Anderson was still finding his shots and was affecting the game in more ways that do not necessarily show up in the scorers sheet. Anderson was battling down low for boards and played tough throughout the game. Anderson finished with 6 points.
Jaiden Graves 2022 Fort Gibson Guard
Graves was the perfect team player for the Tigers on the night. Graves does not do anything flashy but he does what his team needs of him. He plays stellar defense forcing turnover and bad shots. He has good footwork and stays in front of his man. The thing he does best on the court is rebound the basketball. He works hard to get good positioning to be able to box out his opponent to grab the easy board. Graves finished with 8 points for the Tigers.
