These are just some of the players who comprise my San Diego All-Decade Second team.
These players all come with crazy credentials: Between them, they have nearly 30 All-Section selections, 7 CIF Titles and almost every player has gone on to play basketball at the next level.
Who are the members of the All-Decade Second Team? We break them down here:
San Diego All-Decade Second Team
Ryan Langborg, La Jolla Country Day – Three-time All-CIF selection (2x 1st team) is the career leader in points for the Torreys, led them to a D3 state title as a senior. Currently playing at Princeton.
Lynard Steward, San Ysidro – His 2,059 points are good for 16th all time in CIF History. The two-time All-CIF First team selection played briefly at New Mexico Highlands.
Anthony Alston, Rancho Buena Vista – Alston set the CIF record for most free throws in a season and was named to the 2012 All-CIF first team.
Taurus Samuels, Vista – a four-year starter, Samuels was named to three All-CIF teams (2x 1st). Currently playing at Dartmouth.
Justin Moore, Mission Bay – The two-time All CIF First team selection rewrote Mission Bay’s record books and became the latest in a line of top-tier Mission Bay guards. Currently at Pacific.
Eric Monroe, St. Augustine – A three-time All-CIF Selection (2x 1st team) and CIF champion, Monroe and teammate Martin Tombe were the winningest players to suit up for the Saints. Currently at Yale.
Warren Washington, Escondido/Mission Hills – After winning a D1 title at Escondido, Washington transferred to Mission Hills, where he made the All CIF team twice, including first team as a senior in 2018. Currently at Nevada.
Joe Rahon, Torrey Pines – A two-time All-CIF First Team selection, Rahon went on to a successful career at Boston College and St. Mary’s.
Bryce Pope, Torrey Pines – The CIF Player of the Year in 2019 and a two-time All-CIF selection, Pope led the Falcons to the Open Division championship in 2019. At UCSD.
Taeshon Cherry, St. Augustine/ Foothills Christian – Cherry was named CIF Player of the Year in 2017 after leading the Saints to the Open Division title. But his senior year was marked by a transfer to Foothills Christian, where he was dismissed from school on the eve of the CIF Finals. Cherry is in his second year at Arizona State.
Chibuzo Agbo, St. Augustine, St. Augustine – A CIF First-Team selection as a junior and presumably as a senior, Agbo has committed to Texas Tech.
Javion Watson, San Ysidro – Watson led CIF in scoring during his senior year and was a two-time All-CIF First Team Selection. Played collegiately at Long Beach State and CSU San Marcos.
Evan Fitzner, Francis Parker – A one-time All-CIF First Team selection, Fitzner guided the Lancers to the 2014 CIF Division 2 championship game. Played collegiately at St. Mary’s and Indiana.
Spencer Mattox, Sweetwater – Mattox rewrote Sweetwater’s record books, shattering the school’s all-time points record en route to an All-CIF First Team selection in 2014.
Brynton Lemar, St. Augustine – The 6-3 guard guided the Saints to the Division 3 section and state titles his senior year, and was named to the All-CIF First team as a senior.
Damonte Holiday, Hoover– Holiday had an interesting career arch, as his lone CIF First-Team selection was sandwiched between two Second-team selections during his sophomore and senior years. Led the Cardinals to a CIF Championship during his junior year.
Yassine Gharram, Point Loma/ Foothills Christian – Like Agbo, Gharram is headed to his second All-CIF First-Team selection, and played on two CIF Open Division runners up in 2018 and 2019.
Derrick Carter-Hollinger, O’Farrell/ Foothills Christian – He started his career with a Division 5 title at O’Farrell, Carter-Hollinger was a two-time CIF Open Division finalist by the time he graduated, making the All-Section first team twice. He is currently at Montana.
Tommy Rutherford, Grossmont – A two-time All-CIF First-team selection (2015-16), Rutherford holds the career scoring and rebounding records for the Foothillers. He is currently at UC Irvine
Johnny McWilliams, San Marcos – McWilliams earned three All-CIF selections (2x 2nd team, 1x 1st team) before committing to Fresno State in 2016.
Kalob Hatcher, Foothills Christian – The CIF all-time assists leader, he was the catalyst behind Troy Leaf’s assault on CIF’s scoring record.
