1. Rongie Gordon Jr, 6’8 PF, Jeff Davis: The recent UAB signee is back on the court after starting the season unable to play due to a lower-body injury. Since returning the big man has shown why he was so highly sought after by many major Division 1 programs. He should have an immediate impact once he arrives on Blazers campus next fall. His versatility and ability to play inside and outside should make him an all Freshman performer in Conference USA. As he gets healthier as the season goes on and gets his legs under him be on the lookout for him to put up some huge numbers for the Vols this season.
2. Zondrick Garrett, 6’7 PF, Oxford: Z was an early commit to the South Alabama Jaguars and head coach Richie Riley and has since signed his NLI. The long and athletic forward is a terror on the glass, his motor is second to none. He plays the game above the rim at all times and his length allows him to play much bigger than his 6’7 frame. He runs the floor very well on the offensive end but his ability to guard multiple positions and change as well as block shots are his calling card. Look for coach Riley to use him in multiple ways once he gets him on campus.
3. Cameron Boozer, 6’9 F/C, Lanett: This guy looks great getting off the bus, but don’t take that statement the wrong way he is a player. As you would expect from a guy his size he is an active and dominant rebounder on both ends of the court. He is also a very good shot blocker with the ability to challenge, alter and wipeout shots on ball and in help situations. He has decent ball skills on the perimeter for a guy his size. He has good mechanics on his shot and can knock down open shots out to the 3-point line. He is still undecided on where he will play his college ball.
4. Shannon Grant, 6’10 F/C, Sylacauga: A physically imposing prospect that moves very well for a man his size. His soft hands and good feet allow him to score in transition as well as in traffic. He is a rim protector and virtually impossible to keep off the glass when he actively pursues the ball. He needs to improve his athleticism and endurance so he can be more effective for longer stretches of time. Scores well on the block with his back to the basket and has a very good face-up game in the 8-15 ft range. An interesting prospect who is ceiling is high and should garner legit next level attention going forward.
5. Cole Larue, 6’8 PF, McGill-Toolen: A very skilled big with good footwork on the block and who also stretches the floor out to the 3-point line. An above-average rebounder who is a more than decent athlete for a guy his size. The Kennesaw State signee needs to be more demanding on the offensive end, but I’m sure after a year or two under Owls coach Amir Abdur-Rahim that will surely change. He is off to a very strong senior season averaging a double-double so far this season.
