The gritty 5-foot-10, 150-pound point guard is the engine driving the Spartans attack and he’s gotten off to a fast start. Stice is unsure of what the future might hold after high school but he’s enjoying his senior season so far and is helping lead Marist to some early wins.
“We have a tough pre-season before league and it’s been going pretty good so far,” Stice said. “I’ve just been working on ball-handling and not turning it over. I’ve also been in the weight room a lot.”
We recently caught Stice at Marist’s 53-37 road win at Valley Catholic. In the game, the point guard put on a show. Stice was getting to the bucket whenever he wanted to, scoring over bigger players, and stepping back and knocking down the three when open. He handled pressure well, found the open man, played in-your-face defense, and was even was a factor on the glass, pulling down 11 rebounds.
Given his overall skills, high motor, and high academics, it’s not surprising that Stice is a Division III type of recruit. He notes that he’s been in touch with Grinnell – where older brother Zach starts – and some other schools, but is yet undecided if he will play at the college level.
“I’ve contacted some D-III schools but I’ve also applied to some bigger schools,” Stice said. “We’ll see what happens if opportunities come up.”
for now, Stice is staying focused on his senior season. The Spartans are off to a good start and he has a good feel where they are headed. “We have a lot of new guys and they’ve stepped up,” Stice said. “Alec (Vendetti) and the Eagans (Luke & Sam) have played really well so we’re happy with the young players stepping up and playing good.”
