I arrived at the event around midday in time to see some of the last half of games featuring Westchester, Windward, Mater Dei, Santa Monica, Rolling Hills Prep, and Sierra Canyon.
Here’s a look at some of the top scorers that I saw.
1. Devin Tillis – Windward 2020
Tillis is a legit scoring threat on the court. He can score in a variety of ways. He can shoot very well from three-point range; he’s a knockdown shooter if he’s left wide open. He spots up very well and is ready to catch a pass. Moves very well without the ball on the perimeter to get himself open. He can also crash the offensive glass for put-backs, and he can finish strong in traffic around the rim.
2. Wilhelm Breidenbach – Mater Dei 2021
Breidenbach is another player who moves very well without the ball. He makes strong cuts to the basket and is always ready to catch a pass from a teammate. He finishes well at the rim and uses his size to go up hard and shoot over defenders. Although he’s a big man he can handle the ball a bit and make plays off the dribble. Good in transition. He can shoot a little bit from distance too.
3. Malachi Jones – Santa Monica 2020
Jones is a very athletic player who uses his athleticism to his advantage to be a good scorer. He can handle the ball and he has a good slashing game enabling him to attack defenders off the dribble and get to the rim. Once he’s at the rim, he finishes strong around multiple defenders. He’s very quick in transition and can get out on the break ahead of the defense. Gets to the free-throw line.
4. JT Tan – Rolling Hills Prep 2020
Tan is everything you’d want in a post scorer. He has great footwork in the paint and can finish strong against smaller defenders. He has a soft touch around the rim with a nice little hook shot that is coming along. He establishes position well in the paint and looks to make a quick move rather than waste time and let the defense get set.
5. Ziaire Williams – Sierra Canyon 2020
Williams can score from anywhere on the floor. He takes advantage of smaller defenders in the post whom he can rise up and shoot over. He finishes strong in the lane and can draw contact to get himself to the free-throw line. Crashes the offensive glass well for second chance scoring opportunities. Good shooter from both mid-range and three with an array of offensive moves to create his own shot on the perimeter.
