Among the top teams in attendance were San Diego, Bishop’s, San Marcos, El Camino, La Jolla Country Day, Bonita Vista and Santa Fe Christian.
Here are four takeaways from the one-day event:
DJ Sanders reminds me of a former All-OC Point Guard
The 2021 Bonita Vista signal caller is a crafty left-hander with an old school feel and approach to the game that reminds me of former Tustin high school, Saddleback College and UC Davis point guard TJ Shorts. Like Shorts, DJ Sanders doesn’t have a whole lot of hype behind his name, but every time I see him I come away impressed with his performance. Sanders does a nice job of balancing scoring and distributing, doesn’t get sped up and is a very good rebounder for his size and position.
Zach White will have a big season at Bishop’s
White is a four-year varsity player for and his veteran status definitely showed at this event. The 6-foot guard is a knock down shooter from multiple spots and distances around the perimeter and also does a nice job of setting the table for his teammates. White will likely have the brightest of green lights this season, so look for him to log some high scoring games.
Is Devon Arlington the best young point guard in the SD area?
Based on what I’ve seen and how much I’ve seen, I would have to say yes at this point. We’re talking sophomores and freshmen here and the 6-foot-2 sophomore plays the game with a toughness and IQ well-beyond his years. Arlington is a high level on-ball defender and big time competitor who continues to improve his offensive repertoire from transition finisher to a guy who can hit the open 3-point shot.
Morse forward is raw, but has potential
My colleague and fellow Prep Hoops writer Aaron Burgin pointed out Major Latimer as a guy to keep an eye on and the 6-foot-7 forward had a couple of head turning moments. The junior is as raw as they come skill-wise, but has the motor, frame and athleticism that can’t be taught. Latimer has a good set of hands, is quick off the floor for finishes and shot contests and can rise up and finish with two handed dunks.
