The common theme of the MVL this upcoming season will be rebuilding. Many programs are replacing high level players and will try and use newer guys and familiar faces to build around. Many of the teams in the MVL will be doing this and may be a struggle to compete at the top.
1st Team
Dylan Hoosier (2021) Xenia- Averaged 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists. Hoosier was the starting point guard for the Buccaneers last season and will see a completely different role. Last year, he was tasked with getting the ball into Mr. Basketball Samari Curtis’ hands. This year, Dylan will have to take over the responsibility of not only scoring, but continuing to put the ball into teammates’ hands. Expect to see some nice play between him and teammate Zack Gaither.
Darren Taborn (2020) Sidney- 7 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal. One of the most athletic players on the floor for the Yellow Jackets, Taborn is a two-sport stud capable of making a difference on both ends of the floor. With Sidney losing so much size, athleticism, and talent, the pressure will be on the senior to score the ball and be a defensive menace.
Austin Jones (2020) West Carrollton- 6 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists. Jones was one of the best and most consistent rebounders in the GWOC last year. Part of a strong nucleus of talent returning for the Pirates, Jones will be looked upon for interior play and as a rebounding threat.
Jalen Tolbert (2020) Stebbins- 10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists. One of the most explosive guards in the league, Tolbert can take over a game with his speed and athleticism. Part of a Indians team returning much of their talent, Jalen will likely lead Stebbins in scoring and will be a tough matchup any night.
Kalen McKinney (2020) West Carrollton- 12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists. The leading returning scorer from last year, Kalen is now going to have the pressure of being a double-digit scorer consistently. A solid outside shooter, McKinney has a great shooting touch and should be a name to watch during the season.
Honorable Mention
Lathan Jones (2020) Sidney- 3 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal. Under the radar talent bound to have a breakout year now with so much talent gone from Sidney.
Jakob Reed (2021) Stebbins- 8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists. Young guard that exploded on the scene late last year and should only improve his numbers.
Zack Gaither (2021) Xenia- 5 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block. Promising interior player that should see increased productivity with the departure of Samari Curtis.
Predictions
1. Sidney- Of all the teams in the league, they have most athleticism and a solid core to build around.
2. Stebbins- Return 4 of their top 5, but must find a way to score against bigger teams.
3. Xenia- Expect struggles as the Buccs adjust to life without Mr. Basketball.
4. West Carrollton- Finally out of the bottom of the league, but still not explosive enough to move higher.
5. Fairborn- Lose virtually everyone from a year ago and don’t have much varsity experience back.
