On the weekend of September 14, Cerritos College in Norwalk, CA played host to the Ron Massey Memorial Classic, honoring the late legendary high school basketball coach. The event was held on both Saturday Sept 14 and Sunday Sept 15. I was able to attend the event on Sept 14.
There were three courts of gameplay going on simultaneously, with the middle court being the main court where most of the attention was. There was plenty of talent on all courts though. Juggling back and forth between the two outer courts, here’s a look at some of the top players I saw.
1. Christian “Bam” Johnson – Lynwood 2021
Johnson is a great scoring guard, but he can act as a facilitator as well. He’s a good shooter from three-point range and he can create easy looks for himself on the perimeter. He’s a strong guard who can attack the rim and finish plays. He helps open up the court for other players with the defensive pressure he draws.
2. Judah Brown – Pacifica Christian 2020
Brown is committed to St. Mary’s and is a versatile player. He plays forward, but he can handle the ball and run the floor like a guard. He’s very active in transition and he’s an athletic finisher who is looking to attack the rim with authority. He can shoot from three-point range as well. Defensively, he is strong in the paint, contesting everything at the rim.
3. Lorenzo Marsh – St. Anthony 2021
Marsh is a shooting guard that has some playmaking skills. He can handle the ball in transition and act as a facilitator. He has good court vision and he can balance the load between knowing when to get his own shot and when to create looks for his teammates. He’s very quick on the fast break. Creates his own shot on the perimeter and can shoot from distance. Good defender on the wing who contests everything.
4. JT Tan – Rolling Hills Prep 2020
Tan has had a few college offers already, and he’s one of the more polished post players in the area. He’s decisive in the post and looks to make his move before the defense is set up. He finishes well around the rim with a soft touch. Establishes good post position and is ready to catch a pass. Defensively, he acts as an interior anchor and alters many shots.
5. Andre Henry – St. Francis 2020
Henry is a rising wing who has also drawn college interest as he enters his senior year. He has good court vision, with the feel of a point guard although he mainly plays shooting guard. He handles the ball well in transition and can find his teammates on the break. For a guard, he has a good post up game with good footwork. He’s a solid finisher at the rim.
