“I think the thing I enjoyed most was just getting to hangout with the guys, but the best memory was probably when we got to play our 16u team in the championship of the Mullins tournament down in Fort Worth,” Godwin said about his time with Team Buddy Buckets.
Godwin and Team Buddy played a big share of their 2019 games on the Prep Hoops Circuit and it was a strong experience for Sam.
“I feel like the games this summer helped me expand my game to another level. One of the things that I feel separated Buddy Buckets from other programs was the amount of time we focused on character building, not only did they prepare you to be the best basketball player you could be. They also prepared you to be the best overall person off the court as well.
“I think this summer I’ve began to develop more of a leadership trait. Especially returning to high school ball as a senior, I’ve got a bunch of guys looking up to me so I’m trying to set a good example for them to follow.”
Sam’s role as a student athlete and leader is something he takes very seriously. His legacy at Southmoore High School and in Oklahoma High School Basketball is very important to him.
“I just want people to think of me as some who loves to win and loves to compete,” Godwin explained. “I think we have a chance to compete for a gold ball again this year so hopefully we can bring it home.”
The other part of playing Grassroots/AAU basketball is earning scholarship opportunity for the future. Godwin picked up offers from Southern Illinois, North Texas, Colorado Springs, Northwest Oklahoma State, East Central, Central Oklahoma, Cameron, Oklahoma Baptist, and Arkansas-Fort Smith.
“I have official visits set up with Army, North Texas, Tulsa, and Wofford,” Sam said “I might possibly be adding an official with Southern Illinois if we can find a date that works.
“Some of the most recent schools I’ve started talking to are Appalachian State, Jacksonville University, Oral Roberts, University of New Hampshire, and Colorado State.”
The list of D1 schools in contact with Godwin continues to grow. That said, Godwin is looking for the school that is right for him regardless of label.
“The main thing I’m looking for is a good fit,” Sam said. “Just being comfortable around the coaches and players is something I think is really important considering I’m gonna be spending my next four years with them.”
