LONG BEACH, Ca.—As the summer winds down and most kids are back in school, here are some of the standouts that exhibited their basketball prowess during the summer months. Before the Fall evaluation period begins, here are a list of prospects that are committed or are garnering Division I interest, including supreme scorer Javonte Johnson (Chauncey Billups Elite). In addition, stock raisers including the multi-faceted point guard Ty Ty Washington (Firestorm Elite) opened the eyes of college coaches near and far.
Javonte Johnson (Cheyenne Mtn/CO)
2020, SG, 6-foot-5, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the more underrated scorers in the West has to be Johnson. Playing for Chauncey Billups Elite, Johnson showed his ability to score from all three levels. He can pull-up in transition and convert the jump shot or take it right at the rim for the finish. He is a natural scorer who has a knack to get buckets no matter where he is on the court.
Ben Ramirez (Beverly Hills)
2020, PG, 6-foot, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: Ramirez was a pleasant surprise this summer due to his aggressive playing style. He pushes the break with speed and precision and he makes good decisions. He can knock down the deep 3-point shot and he gets great lift on his shot—not too mention his release is quick. He is a bit undersized, but due to his mindset and evolving skill set, he should play somewhere at the D 1 level.
Dalen Terry (Hillcrest/AZ)
2020, CG, 6-foot-6, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: In a nutshell, Terry had one of the better summers of anybody around the country. The multi-skilled wing-type can play the 1-through-3 due to his length, ball skills, and improved feel for the game. He can score in bunces, especially in the mid-range area and his passing prowess this summer was impressive.
Dallin Hall (Fremont/UT)
2020, PG, 6-foot-3, 180 pounds
Hall is a pure point guard who can score as well.Joel’s Take: The prototypical point guard prospect is a the ultimate coach on the floor. He changes speeds well, can convert jump shots , and his passing acumen is high level. Whether it’s running high pick and roll or snapping passes to shooters coming off a pin-down screen, Hall can do it all.
Jaylen Clark (Etiwanda)
2020, SG, 6-foot-5, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Clark is a “big” guard type that impacts the game in multiple ways. He’s a solid athlete who is quite potent—in a straight-line—heading to the rim. He puts his head down and has the dexterity and skill to score in the paint at will. His jump shot is inconsistent, but he has shown the ability to knock in his shot from all areas of the floor. He needs to improve his lateral quickness and left hand, but he is a talent.
