Continue ReadingThe Class of 2020 is not known for its depth in big men but Koby Williamson certainly ranks among the top in the state. The all-around 6-foot-8, 225-pound senior from Santiam Christian worked hard this off-season to improve his skills and pick up more interest in his college recruitment. Williamson did so switching AAU programs to Jordan Team Fly and he considers that many of his goals were met.
“I think it was a good experience and we got a chance to get some looks from some local coaches and some out-of-state coaches from tournaments we went to,” Williamson said. “I really liked the team – it was fun and a good group to play with and we had a lot of talented guys. For myself it was a good experience to get looks and just have a good off-season to improve.”
Individually, Williamson went into the spring and summer looking to display and improve upon several aspects of his game. “I thought I did pretty well being physical, rebounding and defending, and being aggressive in the post,” Williamson said. “I think what I could have done more is try to be more aggressive from the outside, which is something that I know I can do.”
Williamson definitely benefited from the experience from an exposure perspective and numerous colleges have called on him as a result. Northwest Nazarene has requested film and he receives weekly correspondence from Chico State. He’s also started scheduling some campus visits. He makes a trip to Corban this week and a visit to Menlo College in California will take place in September. Williamson also plans on visiting Multnomah.
Williamson is still waiting for that first offer but he’s confident that it will come, maybe on one of these upcoming visits. “A couple of schools have talked about it,” Williamson said. “Nothing in writing yet but I feel for sure there should be a couple of offers coming up.”
Visits and what come of those will definitely play a part if a decision to commit before the season comes into play. “If I have the opportunity I might decide where I’m going early and that way I don’t have to go through the whole AAU and recruiting thing next year,” Williamson said. “But if I feel like I can get more opportunities then I won’t decide early but if the opportunity is there then I’m definitely open to committing early. I just want to see what each school has to offer and fits me the most in terms of a school with what I want to major in and also basketball.”
As Williamson goes through the recruiting process he also has his eyes ahead on his senior season at Santiam Christian with a lot of anticipation. “We’re going to have a really good squad,” Williamson said. “We have really good team chemistry and we have our main core from last year returning. I think we should have a really good season and have a good shot at the title.”
Williamson currently ranks as the #15 ranked player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
