In Ohio, their were quite a few transfers, more than I’ll even mention below. All for different reasons, in their own right. These players will certainly make an impact at their new schools.
Transfers:
• Dom Penn (Dublin Coffman -> Hamilton Heights): Dominic Penn’s dad took a job with the Memphis Grizzlies, so this move makes absolute sense. Hamilton Heights is a private school that develops players on the court and in the classroom. Penn will play a national schedule as well as next to multiple D1 talents. This move should help him get to where he wants to be. The former Coffman guard should lead a terrific starting five night in and night out from the lead guard position.
• Meechie Johnson (Garfield Heights -> ISA): Meechie Johnson’s move was announced shortly after his Ohio State commitment, and came as a surprise. Leaving a school with current family in the program can’t be easy in any means, but you do what’s best for the future. Johnson will sit out his whole junior year, still working on coming back from the ACL injury. The 6-3 guard will attend Osborne Academy and play next to solid talent at ISA, which is a newer program that plays a national schedule. This move allows Johnson to sooner get used to a college lifestyle and gives him a fifth year, if needed.
• Tyrese Hughey (Licking Heights -> Thomas Worthington): Hughey to Thomas Worthington gave the Cardinals the best 2021 trio in the state, in most people’s opinion. Hughey will play a tougher schedule as well as next to other D1 talent level players. Hughey could be in for a big year with guards like Jalen Sullinger and Isaac Settles on the same floor as him. Look for the junior to operate in the pick and roll often.
• Jahki Henderson (Marion Harding -> River Valley): This move many may not know, as Henderson hasn’t had a ton of varsity time. That will change, as the forward is expected to plug right into the Vikings starting lineup. Henderson has experience with the River Valley point guard Ethan Bell from AAU, so the chemistry should work rather quickly. At 6-5 the junior has a lot of untapped talent that we will hopefully see at the high school level.
• Seth Wilson (Akron SVSM -> Lorain): Seth Wilson was a big loss for a team that made the state championship game last season. Wilson is a high major prospect in the 2021 class and will instantly lift an already solid Lorain team. Lorain becomes a team to watch even more with this acquisition.
• EJ Farmer (Lutheran East -> Cleveland Heights): EJ Farmer is a top two guard prospect in the state. Getting to the state tourney with Lutheran East last season Farmer was a bucket. The lefty can create his own shot and rise above defenders on the pull up. This transfer is big for a decent Heights team that may turn the corner this coming season.
• Garvin Clarke (Euclid -> Cleveland Heights): Clarke is a work horse at the lead guard position, and size means little when it comes to his ability on the court. A big loss for Euclid but a huge gain for Heights. Garvin will give a nice one-two lunch with Farmer that is going to work big time down the stretch for Cleveland Heights. Maybe one of the most anticipated teams to watch in NEO.
