One hundred sixty players from Texas and Louisiana (Classes 2020-2022) were available for evaluation by coaches from Division 1, Division 2, and NAIA schools thanks to RCS Sports and Nelson Brand Sports. The overall assessment was that the 2022 class has quality depth at guard.
In this article, I look to discuss and highlight the standout 2022 players from the event. My spotlight 2022 player for #SWEC is Ellis “Trey” Blackmore of San Antonio Cole.
Foundation
This was my first opportunity to see Trey. I saw him play a total of four-(4) games. Competing with a mixture of 2020, 2021, and 2022 players, he definitely held his own.
2022 Guard – Ellis Blackmore – 6’2” – San Antonio ColeCourt Vision & Passing Ability
Ellis’ performance stood out because plays under control. He made good basketball decisions. I liked his overall court vision as well. There is some flash to his passing game; however, he is not careless with the basketball. Playing with Ellis, teammates need to be ready to receive and score because he has the ability to get them open looks–particularly big men rolling with him to basket off ball screens or opposite of his penetrations into the lane.
Other Attributes
As a primary ball handler, Trey was able to get by his defender with a deceptively fast first step. Ellis demonstrated his skill for handling on-ball pressure without turning the ball over; therefore, he is difficult to press or trap. Besides his court vision and passing ability, Trey demonstrated a nice touch around the rim. Also, he was also active on the defensive glass; moreover, he can finish at the rim. He had one of the more electrifying break-away dunks of the event.
- Attention Grabbers
Aaron Williams, Jr. – 2022 (5’10”, Westbury Christian School) initially caught my attention with his full court on-ball pressure. Once he had my attention, Aaron made it clear to me that he is a “knock down shooter.” Aaron has one of the sweetest pull-up transition three point shots that I saw over the weekend. Quickness is the name of the game with Aaron. Consequently, he will create problems for defenses off the dribble. Whether going to the right or left, Aaron made defenders pay that were quick to retreat to defend penetration. Also, Aaron punished defenders that decided to go under ball screens. In both scenarios, Aaron gets the space that he needs to launch that 3pt shot.
Michael Muoneke – 2022 (6’4″, Cy Ranch). Michael moves well with a diversity of moves around the basket. He is relentless getting to the rim in transition using his size, strength, and quickness to create space. Possessing a high motor, Michael was adept at drawing contact in the lane and exhibited a decent shooting range extending to the 3pt point line in the two-(2) games that I saw him play.
- Honorable Mention
Other notable players were Zaire Walker – 2022 (6’1″, Pearland Dawson) and Ryan Moore – 2022 (6’1″, Cy Ranch).
