Continue ReadingPoint guards are the heart and soul of any basketball team. Often acting as an extension of their coach on the court, PG’s may not be the most talented player on a given roster, but are many times the most important. In Wisconsin’s 2021 point guard crop, Kamari McGee has proven to be one of the most productive prospects. Alongside Tyrese Hunter, McGee was apart of one of the best backcourt duos in Wisconsin last year. When looking at a Racine St Catherine’s stat sheet from the 2018-19 season, it was hard to not notice McGee’s name. The PG averaged 10.4 points, 3.8 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game while being the steady hand for the Angles during a 21 win season. After a very solid spring, the guard is looking to finish off the AAU season strong and continue to push his own envelope.
This spring, Kamari showcased his diverse skill set while playing for the Wisconsin Sharks. “My spring [AAU] session went pretty good! I would have to say I improved on controlling the pace of games,” stated McGee. He continued and said, “Like I’ve improved on closing tight games with my teammates and just controlling the flow of the game.” While AAU action simmers down, McGee will hope to continue to improve and prepare for an even bigger summer. McGee says that by the end of the AAU season he wants people to know his name. “I wanna get my name out there more than it is.” The guard said that his second goal is to have a strong second half with his team.
AAU basketball allows players to direct 100 percent of their focus on improving their game. McGee says that his strengths are attacking the basket and handling the ball. As for what he needs to get better at, he said, “Something I would like to improve on is my shot. I’m a good shooter, but I want to become a better one.”
Because he came of out the gates fast, McGee has piqued multiple college programs’ interest. The Wisconsin Sharks PG has gained interest from Miami Of Ohio, UIC, University Of Portland, and Bradley University. College programs are always on the hunt for PG’s with a high basketball IQ who are able to lead their teams to victory; McGee fits the job description. He finishes through contact exceptionally well, has a unique combination of speed and strength, and most importantly: he has the desire and skills to lead his team to a win.
Kamari McGee is already one of the top players in Wisconsin’s loaded 2021 class, but he still has a lot of time left before he leaves for college. With two years left to get stronger, faster, and smarter, McGee will be a tough guy to stop in college.
