The event gave Cougars head coach B.J. Foster a chance to evaluate potential recruits for the D2 program.
Who were some of the surprises at the event? Here’s our list.
CSU San Marcos Team Camp – Event Surprises
Angelo Altiveros, 5-10 2020 PG, Mt Carmel
Altiveros keyed the Sundevils surprise run to the camp championship. The slashing point guard turns the corner and used wrong-footed finishes to get his shot over taller defenders. He’s also feisty on defense.
Brandon Goedhart, 5-11 2020 PG, Escondido
Goedhart might have been the fastest player with the ball in his hands at the camp. He’s wired to score, and gets downhill in the halfcourt and transition. A streaky shooter, Goedhart hit big threes in the clutch.
Sean Reed, 6-4 2020 WF, La Jolla Country Day
Reed, a seldom-used player on last year’s team, has emerged as a big floor spacer for the Torreys. He needs to improve his ball handling and get a little tougher on both ends, but he’s got potential.
Tyler Stanley-Castillo, 6-6 2020 PF/C, San Diego
Castillo continues to improve dramatically over the past two seasons. The long, rangy lefty knows his strengths and plays to them. He runs the floor, can score on drop steps and one-dribble post-ups, and has the vision to pass out of double teams and outlet rebounds. And while he doesn’t take a ton of shots from outside the paint, he hit a few 15-footers to keep defenses honest.
Ian Marcus, 6-0 2020 G, El Camino
Marcus has microwave-type scoring instincts. Once he hits one shot, he can fill up the basket in a hurry. Marcus has crafty handle and nice burst off the bounce to boot. He needs to improve his shot selection, as sometimes he will force bad shots.
