After going 0-3 during bracket play, they turned the tide in the Bronze bracket. The GR Storm 16u team went 4-0 in tournament play and won the Run N’ Slam Bronze championship. They showed incredible heart and determination in order to make such a drastic turnaround.
POOL PLAY
“Our team played fairly well to start the weekend but it did not reflect in the wins category. We were without 2 of starters which I think was a contributing factor in our slow start. It took us a couple games to get in a flow and get used to playing a little different role than they are familiar with.” – Coach Chana
“We began pool play with two tight losses and our final pool play game got away from us against a very good Wisconsin Swing team.” – Coach Chana
BRACKET PLAY
GR Storm 16u vs. Camp Darryl – Win
“We opened bracket play against a well coached Camp Darryl team and kind of found our groove which gave us some momentum for the tournament. Josh Mayhue (East Kentwood) led us that game with a tremendous effort on the defensive end as well as chipping in 15 points and Zach Wentworth (Mt. Pleasant, Sacred Heart) played a huge role in on the offensive end scoring 20 points.
GR Storm 16u vs. West Michigan Lakers – Win
“In game 2 of the tournament run we played a very large and physical West Michigan Lakers team and our guard play really helped speed them up and keep the ball out of the post. Our top 2 performers were Freddy Hull (Muskegon) who chipped in 15 points and Paul Vogeler (Caledonia) who had a tough assignment of trying to keep 2 post players off the glass as well as chipping in 12 points and 10 rebounds.” – Coach Chana
GR Storm 16u vs. Club One – Win
“In game 3 we played a very good Club One team from Indiana that had tremendous guard play. Our top performers for the game were Drew Southland (Mona Shores) who hit 4-3’s to finish with 14 points and 6 rebounds. George Hackett (Forest Hills Central) was amazing defensively, taking their best player out of the game and giving us a shot to win. Without these two kids this game could have been a lot different.” – Coach Chana
Championship Game: GR Storm 16u vs. MBA National – Win
“MBA started some pretty big kids that took away a lot of our driving lanes. Our kids played very hard and were determined to win at this point. We were led by 2 Rockford kids, Sam Krist and Brendan Schueller. Sam finished the game with 22 points going 5-7 from 3. Brendan finished with 18 points and was determined to win. Brendans tenacity set the tone from the beginning of the game and he had a look in his eye that we have not seen before. His play on both ends was simply amazing. He also finished with 8 rebounds.” – Coach Chana
Grand Rapids Storm
MVP
“I would say our MVP for the tournament run was Sam Krist who averaged 20 points per game over the 4 games and was simply unguardable. His quiet confidence was one of the main reasons for our success.” – Coach Chana
