Recruiting Report: Shaun Wahlstrom (2019)
Alvin Gentry Elite had one of the top 17U teams in the state due in large part to their length and solid frontcourt play. Ethan Spry and Shaun Wahlstrom provided the team with length and versatility. They shot the basketball well while making good decisions with the basketball.
Wahlstrom recently upped the ante as he made a decision to dwindle his list down to 4. His decision to do this prior to the start of his senior year came due to the experience of a former teammate. He wants to know where he is going so that after the high school season finishes, he can begin making the transition to competing at that level.
Wahlstrom is one of the top big men in the state. At the 4A level, he believes that he is capable of being a 25-15 type of guy. While those numbers would be remarkable, they are not out of the question. He plays extremely hard and will be the focal point for Estrella Foothills.
Estrella Foothills will have plenty of success this upcoming season while using this next level prospect to the fullest.
Shaun Wahlstrom College Interest
While Wahlstrom has received plenty of interest, he has lowered the list to his four top teams. The decision will likely include selecting ACU, The Master’s University, NAU, or Central Washington.
NAU is the lone NCAA Division-I school. ACU and The Master’s University participates in the GSAC, an NAIA Division-I conference; and Central Washington is an NCAA Division-II school. They play in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
ACU has had a lot of success since moving to the GSAC. Moreover, Master’s is coming off of a great season in which they only lost 3 games and won the GSAC championship.
For Wahlstrom, his selection of schools is simple. He has ACU and Master’s involved due to enjoying the idea of a “small Christian school atmosphere.” He noted, “I grew up with that and it’s very comforting to me.”
As far as ACU, Master’s, NAU, and Central Washington are concerned, he noted that he is interested due to the “constant communication.” All of these programs have invested into him and been very honest with him. Further, he likes that two of the schools are in state while all of the schools are in the west coast; thus close to family.
While basketball matters to Wahlstrom, it is also important to him to find a school with a good business program. He feels that he will get that at all of these schools. For many kids, the idea of going to an NCAA Division-I school would instantly make that school trump the smaller schools.
However, he understands the high level of talent at these other classifications and all of the programs he is interested at those levels have a history of success.
It will be interesting to monitor Wahlstrom this season as he will have a big year. Further, he hopes to make his decision fairly soon in regards to his eventual college destination.
