Top Performers from GA Cup I
Georgia Cup I was held last weekend at Suwanee Sports Academy. Many high school prospects impressed with their play and helped their teams advance in the tournament. Here is who stood out at Georgia Cup I:
Varun Danak (Gwinnett Elite)– Varun Danak has greatly improved since last spring. He finishes and protects the rim at a very high level. Danak has improved his footwork and even showed the ability to take his defender off the dribble. The Brookwood junior has great length at 6’7. Danak has a very high ceiling if he continues to add to his skillset. Look for Danak to have a breakout AAU season heading into his senior year.
Jacquez Thornton (Double Trouble)– Jacquez Thornton was one of the most impressive guards from Georgia Cup. He is very crafty with the ball in his hands and always makes good decisions in the half court. Thornton has great court vision for his age, as he always makes the extra pass. He also excels at breaking down the defense and creating space off the dribble to create scoring opportunities. The future looks very bright for Jacquez Thornton.
Tre Phelps (Double Trouble)– Phelps joins Thornton in the backcourt for Double Trouble. He is a knockdown shooter. His game is very smooth, similar to that of C.J. McCollum. Phelps finishes well on the break through contact and has good size at the two-guard position.
Nathaniel Hammond (South Elite)- Nathaniel Hammonds is an athletic guard who easily breaks down the defense with the ball in his hands. He has a good in-and-out dribble and is a crafty finisher at the rim. Hammonds is always in attack mode.
Christopher Cole (Gwinnett Elite)– Cole showcased his versatility at Georgia Cup. The lefty has a smooth jump shot from three-point distance and scores in bunches. He uses his length to finish over defenders at the rim. Cole was one of the top scorers in the tournament.
