Region tournaments begin this week and most of these squads will be playing their next game Friday and have automatically qualified for the GHSA state playoffs beginning next week.
1. McEachern High School (Powder Springs, Georgia) 25-0
The Indians, like we said a couple weeks ago, have finished the regular season with an incredible 25-0 record. What is next for the Indians? It is now time to focus on bringing home that state title and making their way to the Geico Nationals in New York, New York. The Indians have clinched the number one seed in their region and will play their next game on Friday night in the region 2 class 7A semifinals. The Indians should come out with the win and capture the region 2 title for the fifth straight year.
2. East Coweta High School (Sharpsburg, Georgia) 24-1
Yes the East Coweta Indians pulled it off. Coach Maxwell and his program finish the regular season with a 24-1 overall record in the toughest region in the state. But they are certainly not finished yet. Although they have automatically clinched a GHSA playoff appearance, the region 2 class 7A title is still up for grabs. The Indians are the number one seed in their region tournament but it will not be a cake walk to capture the title. Their next game will be on Friday night in the semifinal round.
3. Grayson High School (Loganville, Georgia) 22-3
The Grayson Rams finish the regular season with a 22-3 overall record and one of their best regular seasons in the school’s history. The Rams clinch an automatic bid in the GHSA class 7A state playoffs after finishing first in their region. The Rams will be looking to capture the region 8 region title this year on their home floor as they are hosting the region tournament this season.
4. Buford High School (Buford, Georgia) 22-2
The Buford Wolves are one of the favorites to capture the class 5A state title this year and why wouldn’t they be? Buford finishes the regular season with a 22-2 record and should breeze through their region tournament this week before the class 5A playoffs begin.
5. Norcross High School (Norcross, Georgia) 18-7
Remember everyone started to panic after the Blue Devils 0-2 start to the season? Since then they are 18-5 and are currently on an 8-game winning streak coming into the region tournament, which will be hosted at their rival school Meadowcreek. The Blue Devils were the favorite to get to the class 7A GHSA title game and they can definitely make their third straight trip. Norcross will have to face Meadowcreek one last time in their region title game this Friday night and that game will be a huge one as it will determine placement in the GHSA playoffs.
6. Meadowcreek High School (Norcross, Georgia) 19-5
The Georgia class 7A defending champions will be looking to defend their title this post season. They finish the regular season with a 19-5 record and have been battle tested all year long. The Mustangs will be expecting to face region rival Norcross High School on Friday night again at home in the region 7 region title game. Can Mustangs surprise everyone again by winning back-to-back state titles?
7. Morgan County High School (Madison, Georgia) 23-2
The Morgan County Bulldogs are the favorite to make their way to the class 3A state title game. After making the final four just a year ago, this Morgan County squad will be looking to make it back-to-back trips and beyond. They should breeze through their region tournament, as they did in the regular season, this week.
8. Newton High School (Covington, Georgia) 19-6
The Newton High School Rams finish their regular season at 19-6. Their record might not show it but this Newton squad will compete and is not an easy win for anyone. Although finishing in third place in their region, the Rams will certainly be a team to look out for come state playoff time next week. Could they make it back-to-back class 7A final four trips?
9. Greater Atlanta Christian (Norcross, Georgia) 21-4
Besides Morgan County High School, Greater Atlanta Christian will be one of the favorites to win Georgia’s class 3A. The Spartans are currenlty the defending champions and have been led by their senior backcourt all season long and have played some high major competition. They should come out winning their region and should make it back-to-back class 3A final four trips.
10. St. Francis (Alpharetta, Georgia) 21-4
The Knights get back into the final top ten rankings with Discovery’s lost to Collins Hill earlier this week. The Knights will be looking to return to the Private-A class title game this year, a game they lost last season to Aquinas High School. I do not see a team stopping them during their playoff run and at the end of the season should be crowd champions.
