Continue ReadingMonday night shouldn’t have been much more than, well, a regular Monday night. The Fox Valley conference slate harbored little potential for craziness, and the couple games that were played should’ve stayed par for the course. But, in such a temperamental conference that’s proven itself to be a league of wayward tendencies, par to the course apparently isn’t a thing, which is why Mondays can get a little crazy.
Here are the biggest upsets from Monday night along with updated standings.
Kaukauna against Oshkosh North:
A team that can successfully operate a one-three-one zone on the high school stage should be labeled as a trap team. So, while the game forecast gave Kaukauna significant winning odds, Oshkosh North fell back on a perfectly engineered zone defense to notch a two-point victory. This happens to be North’s second win over Kaukauna this season. Pair that with a win over Neenah, this win puts them in position to climb up the conference rankings towards the end of the season.
Neenah against Appleton West:
Neenah beat Appleton North 94-84 tonight, ending Appleton North’s six-game win streak. Not to be glass-half-empty, but this loss for West shuts the door for anyone to catch Kimberly in the conference race. However, it makes the second through fifth spot very intriguing.
Implications/Current Standings:
Kimberly, 12-2
Appleton West, 10-4
Kaukauna, 9-5
Oshkosh North, 8-6
Neenah, 8-6
Appleton East, 7-7
Oshkosh West, 5-6
Hortonville, 7-9
Appleton North, 4-9
Fon Du Lac, 0-14
To my surprise and probably yours, the top six remains unchanged. Kimberly stayed atop the conference, widening the gap between them and the rest of the field while the second, third, fourth, and fifth slots become even more interchangeable.
Appleton West, Kaukauna, Kimberly, and Oshkosh North (all top-five teams) are set to play against one another this season. Neenah, the fifth best team in the conference, won’t play any of the aforementioned programs, so they’ll probably win out barring any more upsets. But at the same time, they don’t control their own destiny and will need others to lose in order to climb the conference ladder.
