LONG BEACH, CA.— The CIF Southern Section playoffs have been firinig away on all cylinders with a number of high-leve games and spellbinding performances. The usual suspects—led by Sierra Canyon’s Kenyon Martin Jr. and Mater Dei’s super sophomore Wilhelm Breidenbach—crushed the competition with tenacity and skill. However, there were up-and-comers such as junior Andre Henry (St. Francis) and freshman sensation Amari Bailey (Sierra Canyon) showed what the future has in store.
Will Crawford (Bishop Montgomery)
2019, CG, 6-foot-2, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: The ultimate glue-guy for a Doug Mitchell coached team. The burly 4-man has a surprisingly soft touch out to the stripe and his fundamentals are as tight as it gets. Rebounds well in and out of his area, sets physical screens, and his demeanor is terrific.
Andre Henry (St. Francis)
2020, SG, 6-foot-3, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the better looking juniors heading into the spring evaluation period will be Henry. The rangy scoring guard has very long arms, improved ball skills, and he has increased his bounce. He plays with a good pace, rebounds in and out of his area, and makes high IQ decisions. If the drive is not available he can nail the 3-pointer or mid-range pull-up.
Devin Askew (Mater Dei)
2021, CG, 6-foot-4, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: The firey Askew is as competitive as it gets on the high School level. He has a big frame with good length and his ball skills are solid. He shows good speed in the open court and has a knack of nailing deep jump shots off the dribble. He needs to continue to polish his ability to attack with the left hand and not make the game about his one-on-match up instead of team success.
Jake Kyman (Santa Margarita)
2019, WF, 6-foot-7, 210 pounds
Joel’s Take: Kyman showed his willingness to take the “big shot” as he drained a deep 3-ball to send the game into overtime. His scoring in the 1st half was done in the mid-range area with pull-ups and put-backs.
Aidan Prukop (Mater Dei)
2020, SG, 6-foot-3, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: It’s not surprising in the Mater Dei program to have a player continue to improve his all-around game each and every season. After two seasons of waiting his turn—which is not easy in this self-centered basketball culture we entrenched in—Prukop is starting to see the fruits of his labor. Good size and length and he can burn the nets with his potent jump shot.
