The Field:
No. 1 Kinta (26-2)
Kinta has been here all season; It took a quarterfinal exit last season at the hands of Calumet in overtime. Kinta will look to avenge last year’s game as the top dog. It will face Braggs in the first round, who Kinta beat on November 1 in the season-opener. Odd as it is, Kinta and Braggs were scheduled to play a rematch on Feb. 1, but the game was canceled.
No. 2 Duke (29-0)
Duke has posted an undefeated record to this point and has closely-eyed the No. 1 spot all season. Not to be confused with the team from Durham, N.C., Duke has won nine games against other ranked opponents.
No. 3 Calumet (28-1)
Head Coach Jacob Mayfield and his Calumet team are on a 27-game win streak. With momentum in their favor, Calumet could sneak up and steal a Gold Ball on Saturday, but they will have to get through Leedey first.
No. 4 Leedey (24-5)
Leedey comes into this year’s tournament with four wins over ranked opponents. Leedey will also look to avenge a one-point loss to Lookeba-Sickles from the Area Tournament.
No. 5 Big Pasture (28-3)
Carrying just a trio of losses into State, Big Pasture is one of the most intriguing teams in this year’s’ pool, especially with all three of those losses coming to ranked opponents. Big Pasture will have the opportunity to meet Kinta in the second round, to whom it lost by 31 on Nov. 20.
No. 7 Paden (25-2)
Paden went 5-1 in playoff play, with its only loss coming to first-ranked Kinta. Paden could meet Kinta in the Championship, a matchup Paden must be licking its lips for that one.
No. 8 Lookeba-Sickles (22-7)
Lookeba-Sickles last defeated No. 4 Leedey in the Area Tournament, a win L-S will look to build from and take momentum going into the dance this weekend in Oklahoma City.
NR Braggs (21-5)
If you’re looking for this year’s Cinderella, look no further than Braggs. Unranked Braggs lost to New Lima in its district. Braggs went on to win six straight, including No. 6 Varnum and No. 16 Covington-Douglas. It capped off its playoff run in the Area Championship against none other than New Lima, but had the cards this time for the 76-53 win.
