Lets take a look at a division that is always very competitive which is the 2A division, there is plenty of matchups to watch as well as college prospects.
- Farmville Central is the #1 seed which doesn’t come to a surprise to anyone, they finished the season undefeated with a record of 26-0. Led by one of the best backcourts in the state in Junior Guard Justin Wright and Sophomore Guard Terquavion Smith, they are a team that most don’t want to see. They depth of this team is what makes them a state championship favorite, Senior Forward Dyquavis Wilkins, Junior Guard Samage Teel and Sophomore Forward Leontae Moye are all players that can go for big time nights at any moment.
- Saint Pauls vs Dixon has a chance to be a good one, both teams feature some talented underclassmen and have gotten better as the season has gone on. Dixon HS 2020 Guard Everett Lewis is one to keep an eye on, he has the ability to score the ball in bunches and has what we would call sneaky athleticism. Saint Pauls has an up and coming stud in 2022 Guard Jeyvian Tatum, he has a nice natural feel to the game and good upper body strength for such a young player.
- Southwest Onslow vs Southwest Edgecombe: We can only hope that the folks over at Southwest Onslow have checked the rims because this game will feature two high flying players from each team. Southwest Onslow Unsigned Senior Guard Dharyus Thomas has put on an absolute show this season, he plays the game above the rim but can score in multiple ways dropping over 18 points a night. Southwest Edgecombe Junior Forward Keishon Porter is a high flyer as well, he finishes in traffic offensively and blocks shots on defense, lots of potential in his game.
- South Granville vs West Craven could very well end up being one of the more competitive games that we see in the first round. South Granville features a nice mixture of talent in 2021 Star Guard Bobby Pettiford who can score it at a high level, and 2020 Forward Wy’kise Allen who has put up some very impressive showing this season scoring and rebounding the ball. West Craven is led by Senior Guards Latrell & Laqueze Campbell who are averaging 18 and 15 points each, they come in with a record of 17-7 and have some good wins against talented teams.
- The Battle of styles game will be First Flight HS vs Fairmont HS, First Flight plays an up-tempo style of offense and they are a very good three point shooting team. They aren’t shy about letting it fly and if they get it going from three point land they are a very tough team to beat. Fairmont has always been known as a team that focuses on their defensive ability to slow teams down, so this will be quite the challenge for them. First Flight HS Junior Guard Dylan Blake is the name to know if you don’t already, he can flat out fill it up scoring wise and it’s a tough player to defend.
- #2 seed Greene Central is a team that can make a nice run, anytime you have a defensive presence on your squad like UNCW Signee Imajae Dodd you have a chance. Don’t get it confused, the rams aren’t a one man show as they feature players such as Senior Jekeal Gay is a player that has stepped up for them and is a college prospect.
- James Kenan HS Senior Guard Darryl Mccaster Jr is one for college coaches to keep an eye on, he can score the ball at an extremely high level in a short span of time. If you’re looking for a player that you can put the ball in his hands and tell him to go get you a bucket, then he is your guy.
- You can’t talk 2A basketball without mentioning Kinston HS, they come in as a #9 seed but you would be foolish to think that they won’t make noise. They have gotten some good guard play all season long and have the next star in line for Kinston HS in 2021 G/F Dontrez Styles.
