This year, the Coastal League prevailed 4-2. The surprise of the day came from San Diego – a team in neither league – beating La Jolla Country Day 68-42.
We conclude our coverage of the event with a look at the senior standouts:
Battle at the Bay – Senior standouts
Ronnie Latting, 6-7 PF/C, Mission Bay
Latting did all he could to keep the Bucs in the game, scoring through traffic in the paint and on the offensive glass.
Andre Scott, 6-1 G, Mission Bay
Scott had the scoring repertoire on display in the first half, hitting shots from all three levels and scoring at the rim through contact.
Derrick Carter-Hollinger, 6-5 W, Foothills Christian
Carter-Hollinger put the exclamation point on the daylong showcase by with a couple of vicious dunks in transition in the win over Mission Bay. His numbers for the game were staggering: 30 points, 18 rebounds.
Chase Pagon, 6-3 W, Santa Fe Christian
Pagon continues his big senior year by making his presence on all aspects of the box score. In addition, his jumpshot is coming around, a big development for the unsigned guard.
Bezhad Hashemi, 5-11 G, La Jolla
The streaky scoring guard hit threes from well beyond the NBA three. Shot selection is an issue, but his motor is not. Hashemi plays hard.
Christian Rose, 6-6 F, Bishop’s
Rose was an animal on the boards in the win over Patrick Henry, matching his point and rebound totals at 18 apiece. He has a nose for the basketball, and pursues boards in and out of the paint.
Jaliel Jackson, 6-2 F, San Diego
Jackson’s aggressiveness in the paint helped turn the tide in the Cavers upset win over La Jolla Country Day. Undersized for a big, Jackson has a skill that translates to every level: when engaged, he’s a great rebounder.
Daniel Thomas, 6-1 G, San Diego
Thomas’ decision making at times raises eyebrows, but it comes from a good place. He is an unselfish passer who is always looking to set teammates up off the bounce. Headed to the University of San Diego for football, he continues to excel on the court.
Jackson Larsen, 6-7 W, Christian
Larsen started strong against Francis Parker, scoring at will in the first half, but faded in the second half (three games in three days). At 6-7 with an impressive frame and inside-out skillset, he has a chance to be a big-time player for Northern Arizona
Max Guinn, 6-5 W, Francis Parker
Guinn, like his teammates, put together a strong second half doing what he does best – shooting off the catch. He has picturesque form and follow through. His scoring from the other levels has improved as well during his senior year.
