Players who possess the athleticism, ball iQ, and leadership qualities to make a great floor general are not always easy to find, but you will notice their presence in the game when you see one. There were plenty of touted floor generals at the 2019 Kingston NYC; these were the ones we noticed the most.
Darian James 2019 Rock Creek PG
Darian James was constantly looking for the play at the NYC, allowing opportunities to develop under the basket and or at the wing. He utilized his ball-handling skills to his teammates’ benefit to drive and kick. James has a good mind for the game and generates plays when he is on the floor.
RJ Weeks 2019 Kingston PG
RJ Weeks had one of the best skill sets of any player at the NYC. Weeks has a pretty unstoppable mixture of athleticism, grace, and iQ; not to mention, chemistry with his teammates. There are players who wait for plays to develop and players who analyze the floor and create plays from the dribble before they become apparent to anybody else in the gym. Weeks is more often the latter than the former.
Sammy Cahill 2020 Rock Creek PG
Sammy Cahill was a great two-way player for Rock Creek at the 2019 NYC. He is a high iQ player who leads the ship in the Mustangs’ chemistry-driven play. He can drive and score and finishes well at the rim. I would not want to put a harness on his abilities, but I would guess he could accelerate from base-line to base-line as fast as any player in the NYC pool of talent. More importantly, he is a very talented passer and play-developer for the Mustangs.
Dallen Forsythe 2020 Dale PG
Dallen Forsythe does a fantastic job at helping pick up floor general responsibilities for Dale. Alongside teammate Ike Shirey, his ball-handling adds to a dangerous backcourt tandem that can find guys and spread out the floor effortlessly. Forsythe has the skill set to be a dangerous guard for the first-ranked Pirates.
Ike Shirey 2019 Dale PG
Ike Shirey is a fast, athletic guard who can create scoring both for himself and for his teammates. The 5-foot-9 senior generates a lot of productivity with his speed and ability to blow by defenders with ease. I was told by a Dale coach that he was one of the quickest players he had; I did not realize how quick Shirey was until I saw him step on the court.
Korben Ford 2020 Silo PG
Korben Ford was able to change the game with his passing at the NYC. He has some of the best court vision you will see at the 2A level. Pair that with excellent handles, and you get Korben Ford. Watching the junior standout play, you may be left wondering at times how much is planned on how much he just does based on what he sees. I was pretty convinced last weekend that he was doing a lot more improvising than following a set.
