There aren’t too many freshmen that can compete at the varsity level consistently for an entire season; however, that is what head coach Rory Welsh has at his disposable this season. The Panthers out of Fairburn, Georgia lost four seniors from last year’s state championship team and even though integral role players have returned, new players have been needed to step up as well this season. Enter freshman Kobe Davis who has run the show about as well as you can for a first year high school student athlete. Davis, at 6’0″, is a long and athletic floor general that had a great showing specifically at the annual MLK Dream Challenge at Grady and Maynard Jackson high school in Atlanta, Georgia. The showcase played host to several championship contending teams and Langston Hughes’ match-up, against annual 3A state championship contender Morgan County, was no different. In an intense back and forth game Davis showed poise beyond his years, handling pressure against full court man to man defense and trap situations on either side of the floor. I was most impressed with the late game decision making from the lefty in a 50-42 victory for Langston Hughes. A tough baseline jumper followed by a steal and score sequence all but sealed the victory to give Morgan County only their second loss of the season. The Panthers are currently winners of 4 straight and 7 of the last 8 games and it will be interesting to see how hot this team can stay going into February. From a long term perspective, Davis’ role will undoubtedly get bigger offensively but right now you have to love what you see from him confidence and play-making wise out on the floor. Davis’ consistent play has already earned him an offer from Atlantic-Sun member Kennesaw State University last month.
