Leo Mackie came off the bench and led the way for the Falcons with 16 points and was trailed by Myles Jeffries, Isaiah Williams and Desmond Lewis with 15, 12 and 10 points, respectively. Mason Robbins and Mason Matteson combined for 30 of the Saints’ 41 points in the loss. Here are my five takeaways from the game:
MVP — Leo Mackie
Leo Mackie was on fire, especially in the first half of the contest. Mackie came off the bench to net 16 points, 15 of which came in the first half, to lead the Falcons in scoring. He was doing it all Tuesday night; from getting steals to finishing tough shots, Mackie showed that he is primed and ready to be considered one of the best sixth men in the state.
Mason Robbins can dominate the paint
Despite a near-40-point loss, OCS’s Mason Robbins led both teams in scoring with 17 points on Tuesday night. The 6-foot-8-inch junior forward helped his team in both the rebounding game and in the scoring game with his play in the loss. Aside from being especially tall, Robbins is unusually strong and can really bully the front court at times. He showed those capabilities Tuesday night.
Mason Matteson is one of the best under-6-foot-players in Edmond
The other Mason that had an impact for OCS was junior point guard Mason Matteson. Standing a foot shorter than his counterpart, Matteson finished with 13 points in the loss, the second most for the Saints. Matteson displayed some of the more impressive ball-handling abilities I have seen on Tuesday night. He was able to get separation and was a pesky player for the Falcons to try to guard.
Millwood is playoff-ready
The biggest observation from the Falcon win is their maturity as a team. Having not seen this team since early November, I was unsure what product I would be getting from the second-ranked Falcons. They exceeded my expectations and more. They were brilliant in the win on both ends of the floor. They shot the ball well and relied on their weapons when they were hot and found new slants when they cooled down. Altogether, I thought they displayed pretty good chemistry, especially in their dominance in the fast-break game. Be ready for the Millwood Falcons come playoff time.
Myles Jeffries is an impressive creator
Not many guys are as talented at creating their own shots as Millwood junior Myles Jeffries. He left a pretty good impression with 15 points in the win, most of which came out of the dribble. Jeffries is comfortable and, more importantly, efficient when taking tough shots that most players could not hit. Twelve of his 15 came in the third quarter alone. He really only needs a few inches of separation to be able to knock down a difficult shot. Before you can even think about contesting him, he already released the ball from his fingertips.
