NORWALK, CA—Harvey Kitani, the architect of the Rolling Hills Prep State Preview, put together a nice collection of teams with intriguing stroylines. However, no one expected Camarillo to pull off one of the biggest surprises of this hoops’ season—it’s upset of Mater Dei. Adding to the excitement was a number of impressive performances by super junior Mady Sissoko (Wasatch Academy) and up-and-coming Sedrick Altman (Colony).
Marvin “Tre” Williams (Wasatch Academy)
2019, SG, 6-foot-5, 210 pounds
Joel’s Take: Williams, a Minnesota signee, has that prototypical frame with long arms and he is physically built to handle BIG competition in the fall. He has a smooth stroke that extends out to 24-feet and he gets good lift on his shot. He has the frame to finish through contact and the dexterity to convert buckets in traffic.
Harrison Hornery (Mater Dei)
2021, PF, 6-foot-9, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: Hornery is one of the more improved players in the West. As a freshman he was strictly a spot up shooter. However, now he can affect the game with his jump shot—which can be converted at all three levels—but now he has shown an improved post game and agressive mindset at both ends.
Anthony Frausto (Camarillo)
2020, SG, 5-foot-8, 145 pounds
Joel’s Take: Frausto was the catalyst to spark his team’s comeback against Mater Dei. With Mater Dei leading by 17-points, Camarillo started hitting open shots—led by Frausto. His shot is smooth and he was confident despite the length of Mater Dei.
TJ Wainwright (Santa Monica)
2020, SG, 6-foot-1, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: This slick lefty can get buckets—and in a hurry. He plays at a relentless pace, can knock in shots from all three levels, and even drop off the nifty assist. He has outstanding speed, utlizes the jump stop, and can rise up and hit the shot. His release is quick and his touch is impeccable.
Nick Bowden (St. Bernard)
2020, SG, 6-foot-1, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: Bowden plays with a ton of moxie and he can knock in shots from anywhere. His shot is textbook in it’s execution and he is always on balance. He shows solid leadership skills by his actions at both ends of the floor.
