That’s why the great ones who starred on both ends of the floor have their names etched among basketball royalty forever. At the 2019 Carl Albert Titan Classic, here were four noticeable defensive-minded players who had an impact on both sides of the floor.
Dalante Shannon 2021 Edmond North point guard
Dalante Shannon has been one of the most electrifying players on the floor for the Huskies offensively, but don’t count out his defense. Shannon’s quick hands, great defensive effort, and high motor make him dangerous as a ball-swiper and shot-blocker. The 6-foot-2 sophomore can guard just about anybody on the perimeter and keep them there.
Mark Berry 2019 Lawton Ike forward
Mark Berry stands out for his ability to defend anywhere on the floor in a man; whether it be a perimeter wing or a five under the basket, Berry keeps his man in front of him and is strong enough to hold it down. The 6-foot-6-inch forward has long arms and is very strong, making him a tough guy to best. He makes everyone around him better as well.
Antonio Gordon 2019 Lawton Ike wing/forward
Antonio Gordon stood out for being an omnipotent defender; having a hand in the Eagles’ defensive operations on every part of the floor. Gordon got steals, protected the rim, and played shutdown defense one-on-one. Gordon’s ability to move made him a pervasive defender to opposing offenses.
Matthew Bayliff 2019 Santa Fe South center
Matthew Bayliff put up an a great effort on the defensive end against Lawton Ike on Saturday. Tasked with protecting the paint against one of the most dominant front-court duos in the state, Bayliff effectively defended the rim against a 6-foot-6 and 6-foot-10 act. Standing at 6-foot-8-inches himself, Bayliff has a great skill set as a true post and was one of the most underrated players at the Titan Classic.
