Continue ReadingEdmond North matched up with Piedmont in the first round of the Carl Albert Titan classic in Midwest City on Thursday. North would come up with the 82-58 win, led by Dalante Shannon and Elijah Mason‘s 18-point apiece performance. Cameron Lee and Trey Nolen had 12 and 14 points for the Huskies, respectively. Dylan Hahn led all scorers with 21 points for the Wildcats, while teammate Hunter Oden had 16 points. From the game, here were my five takeaways.
MVP: Dalante Shannon
Sophomore point guard Dalante Shannon was the easy pick for MVP of the game. Shannon has had a terrific season, but sent a valuable message with his performance Thursday night: “I’m just getting started.” Shannon finished the night with 18 points to lead the Huskies to the win. The 6-foot-3 sophomore did everything; he blocked shots and got steals defensively. He passed the ball in transition and set up scorers offensively. He shot the ball well, got to the rim, and took good shots. And he even laid down a pair of back-to-back transition dunks in the second quarter. It’s safe to say that Shannon’s game has transformed.
Edmond North is a scary team right now
Quietly, the Edmond North Huskies from Danforth Road in Edmond, Oklahoma, have been playing fantastic basketball. The Huskies, whose last State Championship just two years ago in 2018, have been one of the best teams in the OKC metro this year. What makes them fall into the mix is the fact that many consider the Huskies to be the third-best team in the city of Edmond. However, I think this team is peaking at a very good time in the season. Led by head coach Scott Norris, who took the North job after leaving Coweta over the offseason, has the Huskies looking like an entertaining , well-oiled machine so far this season. Don’t be surprised if the Huskies make a really successful run come playoff time.
Hunter Oden to 1k
In spite of the loss, Piedmont senior guard Hunter Oden reached a career milestone Thursday night when he scored his thousandth career point for the Wildcats. Making the achievement even sweeter, teammate Dylan Hahn reached the same milestone less than a week earlier.
Dylan Hahn is an explosive scorer
Piedmont senior point guard Dylan Hahn showcased his impressive scoring abilities on Thursday night. He was excellent off the dribble and was a high point in the loss for the Wildcats. As one of Oklahoma’s latest members of the one-thousand-point-club, Hahn has consistently shown the world that he has exceptional scoring capabilities and can dominate in that game, finished with 21 points.
Sam Walker fantastic from the bench
Sophomore Sam Walker of Edmond North came off the bench for the Huskies and played a big role for his team, though it may have gone overlooked with the stellar play from his teammates. Walker shot the ball well, didn’t through up pointless shots, and rebounded and gave great effort as a glue guy for the Huskies and was exactly what you would want from a bench player.
