Prospect Spotlight: Sion James (2020)
Already with five Division I offers to his name, Lanier point guard Sion James has made a name for himself in Georgia, and could add to that list considerably this summer.
James describes himself as a playmaker above anything else, and at 6-foot-4, has the size and ability to be one of the state’s best.
“What I like to do on the court is not really pass and not really scoring, it’s just playmaking. I like to have the ball in my hands and make the smartest play for my team,” said James. “I just try and make the best play for everyone.”
With Game Elite 16U this past spring and summer, James started to cement himself as one of the most sought-after prospects in Georgia. And he was focused on learning, no matter where or who he was playing with or against.
“This summer was very good for me; Game Elite is my family now,” said James. “On the court, I learned a lot, even on my worst games I learned a lot. I learned different way to play against different opponents and played with some great players, and learned a lot from them.”
Now, the junior point guard has stepped into a big role at Lanier, and is embracing the opportunity to lead the team.
“I’ve stepped into a bigger role, I’m the main person on the team and the main facilitator,” said Lanier. “I’m a big scorer on the team and have a really big role.”
On the recruitment front, Ole Miss became the first high-major program to offer James, that was in September. He’s also been offered by James Madison, North Florida, Rice and Mercer.
He says Georgia Tech has been hot on his trail, and he’ll be headed there this weekend for an unofficial visit.
“Basically what I try to do is play my best game, a game that I know colleges like to see, and then they come see, simple as that,” said James.
“I could definitely see myself with lots of Power Five offers (by next summer), because of my athleticism, size and my physical stature. Plus the way that I play, it’ll replicate really well in the ACC, SEC, all these Power Five conferences.
