McEachern advances in City of Palms
Fort Myers, FL – McEachern High School out of Powder Springs, Georgia made their second straight appearance in the famous City of Palms Classic for the second year in a row. The Indians came into last night’s contest at a 5-0 record and already beating two of Georgia’s top teams in Wheeler High School and Holy Spirit Prep earlier in the season.
Junior point guard Sharife Cooper and Auburn commit senior forward Isaac Okoro came into the City of Palms with a combined record of 61-4 together. Let that sink in for a moment. Since Cooper and Okoro been wearing the same McEachern jersey together, over the last three seasons they have only lost four total games thus far. Will that change while they are competing in Fort Myers? One of the four losses came last season in this very same tournament last year when the Indians fell to University School (FL).
McEachern cruised through last night’s first round matchup against Miami Christian (FL) 71-48. Miami Christian (FL), a team McEachern defeated last season in Atlanta’s Tournament of Champions, were no match for the Indians fire power. The Indians had control of the game from the tip and led 26-6 after the end of the first quarter. Coach Mike Thompson and his staff will be looking to make it back to the COP semis and maybe even further this year.
2020 guards Sharife Cooper and Alyn Breed finished last night’s game with 18 points a piece. Senior forward Auburn commit Issac Okoro finished with 15 points and Northwestern commit senior forward Jared Jones finished with a 12-point and 15-rebound performance. Junior guard Alyn Breed will be trying to put his name on the national spotlight during his time in Fort Myers. His scoring abilities and skillset is not new to us spectators from Georgia. His 18 points looked very impressive last night and if he is consistent enough as the week goes along he should receive some attention.
McEachern will be facing Paul VI (VA) in the quarterfinal matchup later today and will face the winner of IMG Academy and Mountain Brook (AL) in the semifinals if they advance after today’s matchup.
