LA VERNE, CA.—The 3rd annual Classic at Damien was as good as advertised with a number of outstanding performances from teams (Riverside Poly/Fairfax) and individuals (Onyeka Okongwu and Ziaire Williams).
Onyeka Okongwu (Chino Hills)
2019, PF, 6-foot-8, 225 pounds
Joel’s Take: The most dominant performance of the day had to go to the USC-bound Onyeka Okongwu. The skilled 4-man affected the game at both ends of the floor and put together a McDonald’s AA Game performance. Whether it was dominating the interior with his magnetic hands and electrifying finishes or denying foes at the rim—he did it all.
Dondre Bausley (Riverside/NotreDame)
2019, WF, 6-foot-2, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: It’s hard to pick just one standout for the Titans as Anthony Holland and Pierce Sterling had their moments. However, when it came to both ends of the floor and clutch finishes inside and out, Bausley was the catalyst.
Jake Kyman (Santa Margarita)
2019, WF, 6-foot-7, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: Kyman is one of the better shooters in the West and this UCLA signee is having an exceptional senior season. His feathery touch was on display as was his pin point passing as his team withstood the loss of Max Agbonkpolo (illness) to pullout a gut-wrenching victory over Etiwanda.
Darius Mason (Pasadena)
2019, WF, 6-foot-4, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: “Beast” comes immediatley to mind when describing Mason. The chiseled wing-type attacks with ferocity in the open court, finishes over or through contact and overall just finds ways to impact the game.
Jarred Hyder (Damien)
2019, CG, 6-foot-2, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: The Spartans received fine performances from Austin Cook and Efeanyi Okeke among others, but Hyder made most of the clutch plays. He hit deep 3s, attacked the rim, and forced a number of steals.
Lamont Butler (Riverside Poly)
2020, PG, 6-foot-1, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: The ultimate game manager ran his team with aplomb and hit big shots inside-and-out as the Bears clawed out a victory over favored St. John Bosco. As Butler physically matures, he is getting more explosive and as a result more efficient on the offensive end.
