Kudos to Carlsbad High coach Sam Eshelman for putting together such an excellent one-day affair.
While the focus is on the teams, there were individual standouts at every grade level throughout the day. In this report, we will discuss some of the sophomores who impressed us, including one who has scored 50 points in a game this year.
BSN Sports Showcase – Sophomore standouts, part 2
Joseph Rojas, 5-11 G, Rancho Mirage
Rojas is a confident shooter with unlimited range and isn’t afraid to pull it from deep. Used primarily as a point guard, Rojas struggled to handle against pressure. Once he got the ball into the halfcourt, however, he knocked down threes from well beyond NBA range.
Grant Kelly, 6-3 W, Rancho Mirage
Kelly has what can best be described as an “old school” game. He’s a crafty slasher and he’ll hit a jump shot off the catch, but he’s at his best on the block, where he has a nice jump hook. Kelly does an excellent job sealing and getting post position and using the hook to finish over defenders big and small. He has scored 50 in a game this year.
Tyson Robinson, 6-0 PG, El Camino
Robinson is a physical point guard prospect who is arguably one of the best on-ball defenders in his class in So-Cal. He takes pride on defense, sliding his feet and aggressively cutting off drives. He scored 12 points in the blowout over Brea Olinda, and showed growth in his scoring from midrange. He’s a streaky shooter from three, but his jumpshot is playable.
Tristan Montera, 6-1 G, Brea Olinda
Montera was one of the lone bright spots for the Wildcats on the day. A willowy shooting guard blessed with nice length and a solid shooting stroke, Montera had an efficient shooting effort – 9 points on 4-6 field goals. He’ll be one to monitor moving forward.
