Donovan Williams is a Longhorn #HookEm????
Donovan “Stretch” Williams of Fort Bend Elkins/Houston Hoops is officially a Big 12 signee as of today after signing his letter of intent with the University of Texas. The Longhorns program is an explosive wing with a very lengthy body that will be a two-way threat in the Big 12. Williams definitely passes the eye test with his athleticism. He is a bouncy leaper and one of the fastest end to end wings in the country. He will fit right into the University of Texas offense after they graduate senior and former 5A UIL State Champion Kerwin Roach. The four-star guard also is skilled in how he can knock down the perimeter jumper and use his length to finish around defenders or above the rim.
“I think the biggest factor was the feeling I got on campus during my visit. Austin reminded me a lot of Houston and I love my city,” said Williams on signing with UT. “After continuously talking to Coach Smart, I could tell he was genuine with everything he said. Being able wear the word Texas across my chest was an opportunity i couldn’t pass up.” Williams was heavily considering Arizona State, Georgia, Miami, and Texas A&M, but he felt Texas was the right spot for him,
Williams entered the spring as an under the radar three-star prospect and decided to take a chance on himself by leaving Adidas Texas P.R.O. and playing on the EYBL Circuit with the Houston Hoops. “It was an experience like no other. It was different going into this summer with new coaches and new teammates; most of whom were more sought after than me, so going in I knew I was not going to be able to have the ball in my hands as much as I had become accustomed to. It was tough at the beginning trying to find my niche, but I had the confidence in myself and I never shied away from a challenge. My challenge to myself was to go out and get the same notoriety people said I would not be able to get,” he said of the team switch. “Playing on the EYBL gave me the opportunity. All I had to do was put in the work and it payed off like i thought it would.” Williams is now a four-star nationally ranked senior because he performed well on the platform presented to him.
Final Thoughts
Williams looks to lead the Knights of Fort Bend Elkins to a deep run in the playoff this upcoming season. He will be joined by state-ranked shooting guard Collin Warren in the backcourt. When talking about his goals for his senior season, Williams mentioned, “State Championship. That is the number one goal for me. I want to help my team accomplish this goal we have set for ourselves. Other than that personally… Player of the Year or hopefully an All American selection. Ultimately, I just want to be the best player I can be and whatever accolades come with that I will gladly accept.”
