Delta brings back the biggest scoring threat in 3A which gives them a huge jump start on the rest of the classification. Derek Smith will be causing teams plenty of nightmares throughout the course of the season. Every team will have to do whatever they can to stop him in order to have a chance to knock off Delta.
Smith will be without the top two other leading scorers for Delta. However, Jager Springer and Jaymen Brough were vital to the team’s success last year as juniors. Between these three, Delta should have plenty of firepower to win big games, including a 3A state championship.
2. Morgan
Morgan competed at a high level last season and has work to do with Cade Russell departing. They will have to prove to the rest of the 3A world that they are capable of competing without Russell.
Trey Miles will lead this group in terms of playmaking. He demonstrated that he is more than capable of making a huge impact last season and should thrive with more weight put on his shoulders. Miles will also have help with Kaleb Calderwood. Calderwood, despite only being 6’4, is a double-double machine.
In addition to Calderwood and Miles, Tyson Hurd extended the floor for Morgan last season and will look to do that and more this upcoming season.
3. Emery
Emery might have the most returning playmakers out of any team in this class. They could easily be higher on this list due to the number of weapons that they have.
Kyson Stilson can score the basketball from all three levels. Further, he has a good feel for reading the defense and makes good reads. Stilson is also a monster on the glass who fills up the stat sheet. Stilson is aided by another guard who can distribute and put his teammates in good spots in Brax Jensen.
Cade Brazier completes the trio as another scoring threat who shot the leather off of the basketball. This group has plenty of shooters to extend the court. This team is as dangerous of a team as there is in 3A. Do not be surprised to see them make a deep run and exceed their Way Too Early Ranking!
4. South Sevier
South Sevier might have the most to prove out of all the teams on this list. They lost their three best playmakers from last season, but bring back a slew of talent with plenty of potential.
In order for South Sevier to make the noise that we anticipate that they will make, their young and skilled prospects will need to turn their potential into wins. This team rarely has had an issue with winning as they have been long heralded as one of the top programs in the 2A and now 3A world.
Some of the key names to look out for on this roster are as follows: Kaetz King, Peydon Wood, and Tyson Chisholm.
5. Grand County
Cameron Hoppensteadt is one of the biggest double-double threats in the 3A world. With him returning to Grand County, this team will win the vast majority of rebounding battles; thus creating extra possessions. Further, opposing teams will struggle with guarding him due to his skill and motor.
Hoppensteadt cannot do it alone, though. Good bigs cannot survive without good guards. It is imperative that the guards step up in order to aid in making Hoppensteadt be as effective as possible. Nolan Ramirez is the most likely prospect as he was second on the team in assists last season.
