Prospect Spotlight: Cole Hanin (2021)
Cole Hanin, a class of 2021 point guard prospect from Bullis, is coming off an excellent summer campaign with Team Durant. Prep Hoops recently interviewed Hanin to discuss his overall game, recruitment, goals, and much more.
PH: Best piece of coaching advice you’ve ever received is what? And from whom?
CH: “The best piece of coaching advice was simple, but very effective. This past summer for Team Durant, the coaches told me to shoot if a defender ever had a hand down or was 3 steps away. Even if my shots weren’t falling, it would open up several lanes and create better opportunities for my teammates.”
PH: On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your overall performances this summer and why?
CH: “Overall, this summer I believe I played some of the best basketball of my life. This spring and summer season, I took on a role as one of the major leaders of the team. The circuit provided great preparation for the upcoming Bullis season, and I am looking forward to taking on a significant leadership role. I would rate my overall performance this summer an 8 out of 10. While I’m happy with my performance, there is always room to improve.”
PH: Most improved part of your game in the last 6 months?
CH: “The past 6 moths I’ve been been working on taking care of the ball on the offensive side of the floor. Being a point guard, it’s very important to me that I don’t turn the ball over during the game, and I drastically improved that over the course of the summer.”
PH: Most underrated part of your overall game?
CH: “The most underrated part of my game is definitely my defense. I pride myself in being a pest on the defensive side of the ball, and I’m always the first one on the floor for a loose ball or to slide in to take a charge.”
PH: What are you working on?
CH: “Currently I’m working on getting stronger and more explosive. At the next level, it is important to be able to initiate and take contact as the competition gets more physical.”
PH: GPA?
CH: “I finished my freshman year with a 3.85 GPA.”
PH: How is your recruitment? Have you received any offers, interest, or taken any visits?
CH: “I have received one Division 1 offer from James Madison University and have interest from a couple of other schools. For example, I have taken unofficial visits at Lehigh and Boston University. I have also been in contact with Mount St. Marys, Brown, and UMBC through their elite camps this summer.”
PH: What are your short and long-term goals?
CH: “My biggest short term goal right now is to improve my body and help us win the IAC this year. Long term, my goal is to play Division 1 college basketball.”
PH: How do you see yourself fitting into a college program down the road?
CH: “I see myself as a pass first point guard that hits the open shot when available. Someone who leads the team on and off the floor. I feel that my IQ and leadership abilities along with my skill set will translate to the next level as long as I continue to work.”
