DMVelite Live Period Warm Up Scouting Report-Guards
Yesterday, DMVelite held its Live Period Warm Up event featuring some of the top AAU teams in the area. After a day filled with exciting finishes and great competition, we will break down some of the players who impressed us on Saturday in a scouting report style.
Isaiah Wong | 6’3 | WeR1 (2019)
Wong was hands down the best guard on display in yesterday’s action. He operates in pick-and-roll actions effectively with his ability to slash in between the hedging big man. Strong driver with ability to finish with craft or over the rim. Capable three-point shooter off the catch. Energetic player on the defensive end.
Jay Heath | 6’2 | Team Melo (2019)
Strong, bullish guard that attacks the rim with no mercy. Quick first step to help blow by his defender. Good at creating and finishing through contact. Competitor defensively and an above average rebounder at his position.
Alexander Rice | 6’2 | WeR1 (2019)
Extremely high basketball IQ. Floor general that makes the right reads in half court sets. Attacks and finishes well in transition. Always seems to make the right basketball play. Communicates defensively. Good leader.
Jason Gibson | 6’1 | 6th Man Warriors (2019)
Elite three-point shooter who is a threat every time the ball touches his hands. Quickly gets feet set after sprinting off pin down screens to get his shot off. Utilizes pump fake effectively to keep his defender guessing. Pesky defender who is always looking to jump the passing lanes.
Johnathan McGriff | | 5’10 | Team Melo (2019)
Shifty point guard with extremely quick handles. Most effective in isolation situation when he can break down his defender and get to the basket. Good at making help defense commit and finding open teammate. Lefty who looks to score from 15 feet and in. Inconsistent outside shot. Quick, active on-ball defender.
Jahmal Banks | 6’5 | 6th Man Warriors (2020)
Long, athletic guard who is a threat to score from all three levels. Also a star wide receiver on the football field, so has solid footwork and leaping ability that translates over onto the hardwood. Embraces contact on both ends. Plays with a chip on his shoulder. Can control a game solely by crashing the glass.
Ryan Conway | 6’1 | Team Melo (2021)
Smart point guard who can create his own scoring opportunities consistently. Effective at breaking down his defender and getting into his jump shot. Crafty player all around, but doesn’t do too much at unnecessary times. Defends well when locked in, but can go through lulls when playing off the ball. Very coachable.
Ike Cornish | 6’5 | Team Melo (2021)
Long, lanky guard who scores efficiently around the rim. Getting more consistent with his three-point shot. Not quick, but uses his length to gain position in many situations. Has to be more aggressive as a rebounder. Good on-ball defender, but can be caught sleeping when off the ball.
Tremaine Chesley | 6’4 | SMD All Stars (2020)
High-energy guard that competes hard on both ends. Aggressive scoring mentality whenever he has the ball. Rarely settle for three’s. Simple offensive game off the dribble that consists of two or three dribbles before scoring around the rim or pulling up in the mid-range. Good free-throw shooter. Intense defender that is willing to pick up full court.
RJ Blakney | 6’5 | Team Melo (2019)
Explosive scoring guard who can put on a show in the open court with his ability to finish above the rim. Vigorous rebounder who can spark the fast break and take the ball coast-to-coast when the situation presents itself. Uses his length well on the defensive end to assert himself as a shot blocking presence. Intense player.
