Recruiting Spotlight: 2019 Jarod Lucas
NORWALK, CA.—Jarod Lucas, who also plays with the Compton Magic during the off season, has been a definite standout during the high school season in Southern California. Seniors Bryant Howing and Julian Lopez have been clutch for the Conquerors, but the team’s best player and catalyst has been Lucas.
Lucas has been a starter since his freshman campaign and he has taken his game to a new level each and every season. The 6-foot-3 junior is a bonafide shooter who can knock 23-foot jump shots with consistency. His pull-up game has evolved as well, but there is another trait that you can always depend on when evaluating Lucas—his motor.
Lucas is one of the better jump shooters in Southern California and his motor runs hot.“I would have to say shooting comes immediately to mind in terms of strengths, but my improved leadership I bring to each and every game really stands out to me as well,” explains Lucas.
From the opening tip to the sounding of the final buzzer, Lucas is a relentless attacking player who has a “never give up” mindset infiltrated into his DNA. With all players, their shot will come and go from time to time, but their motor is something that all players can control, and Lucas has always understood that approach.
Despite the impressive scoring outbursts and impressive victories, Lucas knows he needs to continue to add to his game if he is to play at the Division 1 level.
“I definitely need to improve my on-ball defense and overall athleticism,” notes Lucas.
At the Division 1 level there is going to be bevy of length thrown into the equation and Lucas will have to continue to improve his initial burst off the dribble as well as his ability to finish over length.
There have a number of colleges that have checked out the Conqueror standout in the past year and the verbal offers from colleges have been steady.
“Oregon State, Nevada, Santa Clara, and Tulane have all offered and recently Ohio State has been calling. I plan on making a decision sometime after the season or maybe after the Spring evaluation period,” notes Lucas.
The decision on where he goes to school this Fall can be put to the side as the Conquerors have a legitimate chance to cut down the nets in March.
“The Classic at Damien really showed us that we can compete with anybody. There are times when your team will have to face adversity during a game, but we learned to stay locked in and the results were evident as we pulled out some clutch victories,” explains Lucas.
