Recruiting Report: Scott Walter (2018)
“Gritty” and “tenacious” are words that come to mind when you think about Scott Walter (2018). The 5’10” St. Vincent-St. Mary guard would be a nice addition to a program that needs a player with toughness and a willingness to do anything to help the program. He also carries a 4.0 GPA.
Walter is getting looks from Baldwin Wallace and Mt. Union and holds an offer from Damon. He watched his stock rise after an impressive performance in the Irish’s win in the Flyin’ to the Hoop tournament in Dayton on Jan 14 in which he scored 22 points against Fairland/Proctorville.
“I’m a physical guard. My toughness and getting after it are probably my attributes, “ said Walter, who is averaging 11.2 points a game and has 60 assists and just 13 turnovers in 315 minutes on the floor in 13 games. He shoots 45.9 percent from the 3-point stripe and 72.5 percent from the line and averages just under three steals a game.
The few times I’ve seen him play he’s always been in the middle of the fray. He’ll play some pestering defense and has shown the ability to create turnovers with heady play. Quick with the basketball, he can get into crevices of the defense to create for others and can bring the ball up against pressure. He is also a good shooter who has shown an ability to knock down the 3-pointer.
“I’m willing to compete every day and make that team better,” said Walter, when asked what he’d bring to a college program. Walter dressed varsity his freshman year and was a rotation player as a sophomore and on last year’s state champion team, before moving into a starter’s role this winter.
St. V coach Dru Joyce II raves about Walter’s intangibles and leadership. He cites Walter’s “toughness” as one of the guard’s top attributes.
“He’s a leader and he’s going to lead by example, make shots, get on the floor for loose balls, whatever needs to be done. He’s a great kid,” said Joyce.
Athleticism runs in Walter’s genes. His father played college football. Walter was standout on the St. V football team this past fall as a safety/wide receiver and earned honorable mention All-Cleveland.com in that sport. He is “leaning” toward playing basketball in college.
