Public School Cape Fear Region Power Rankings !
With The end of January approaching fast and Conference tournament time right around the corner, we take a look at some of the top public school teams in the Cape Fear Region this year. Each of these teams has at least two players that can play on the collegiate level so college coaches should keep a close eye on them and possibly drop in during tournament time.
#1 Hoke County HS (17-1)
Key Win: Overhills
The Bucks have had an outstanding season this year with their only loss coming to The Christ School, early on in the year. They are led by Senior Dakari Johnson & Silas Love but get a high amount of contribution from Freshman Guard Jaquantae Harris and Senior Guard Jaleel Ray.
#2 Clinton HS (17-1)
This squad gets production from so many different players that they are a very difficult team to game plan and defend against. Seniors Zion Autry, Dewan Lesense, Kris Williams and David Leggett are all productive as well as Junior Forward Xavier Howard. Their only loss this season came to the 2017 State Championship of Northside HS- Jacksonville.
#3 Westover HS (15-1)
Key Wins: 71st HS, Overhills
Key Loss: Terry Sanford
The Wolverines have played well this season with their only loss coming on the road to Terry Sanford. Since that loss they have bounced back in a major way, not only winning the Holiday Classic Tournament but also putting together a 9 game win streak.
#4 Southern Lee HS (15-3)
Key Wins: Overhills, PInecrest
The Cavs have put together a successful season thus far and look to continue to build as tournament time approaches. With wins over Pinecrest and some other solid programs, they hold down the #4 spot on our list. Only time will tell how dangerous of a squad that they can possibly be, but overall they have been solid this year.
#5 Overhills HS (14-4)
Key Win: Terry Sanford
Key Loss: Westover, Hoke County
Despite their lack of a high amount of seniors, the Jaguars have put together a pretty good season. In each of the games they came up short, the loss to a team that is a conference title contender so technically they don’t have any ‘‘bad’’ losses. Junior Guard Zavian McLean continues to impress averaging 24 points and 5 rebounds a night.
Other Teams in the mix: Terry Sanford HS, Jack Britt HS, 71st HS
