Prospect Spotlight: Jacob Huynh (2018)
Northwood senior Jacob Huynh embodies the term “student-athlete.”
The 6-foot combo guard ranks 17th in scoring average among his Orange County peers at 19 points per game in leading the Timberwolves to a 13-4 overall record and No. 8 ranking in the county.
In addition to his scoring on the hardwood, Huynh is sporting a 3.8 grade point average and racked up a 33 super score on his ACT.
“I’ve heard from a lot of D2 and D3 schools,” Huynh told Prep Hoops So-Cal of his recruitment. “I’ve heard from San Francisco State, Humboldt and I’m trying to get in to UCSD.”
Northwood senior Jacob Huynh is one of the premier scorers in Orange County. Most of Huynh’s scoring this season has come by way of his quick, shifty and explosive drives to the basket where he uses his strength and body control to absorb and finish through contact.
“Mostly my driving,” Huynh said of how he’s been able to score this season. “I’ve seen a lot of lanes opening up and I’m taking advantage of that.”
Northwood as a team has taken advantage of a roster tailor made for the style coach Tim O’Brien wants to play — fast paced and free flowing on offensive and lockdown pressure on the defensive end.
The cohesive roster showed most in the Timberwolves upset of OC No. 4-ranked and Trinity League member JSerra in the SoCal Elite/Gary Raya Classic.
“Team defense,” Huynh said of how Northwood achieved the upset. “We communicate a lot on the defensive end and a lot of guys stepped up late. Seth (Locke), Devin (Owens) and Trent (Harper) were great. It was an all-around team effort.”
Huynh said he’s excited about the Timberwolves’ success this season, and hopes to continue his basketball career at the next level, but knows where he needs to improve to be able to contribute at the collegiate level.
“I need to be more of a leader and floor general,” he said. “I need to continue to get more guys involved with my passing and driving abilities. I’m starting to work on my 3-pointer and I think my training has helped my shot improve a lot. If improve on those, it will take my game to the next level.”
