Prospect Spotlight: Damian Townes (2018)
One of the best scorers in Southern California that nobody knows about is Bellflower High combo guard Damian Townes.
The burly 6-foot-2 scorer is averaging around 34 points on the season with games of 63 and 43 under his belt.
Townes says he thinks the reason why so few people know about his game is because people have been questioning him his whole life.
“People have been doubting me,” Townes told Prep Hoops So-Cal after dropping 43 in a loss to Mayfair. “They say I’m too small and too short. I came off the bench last season, but the coach gave me a chance to start this year and I’ve been averaging 34 points.”
Bellflower senior Damian Townes is one of the best SoCal scorers that few know about. The reason why Townes has been able to score so well is because he has a versatile scoring package. He knocks down 3-pointers off the catch and off the bounce, he’s crafty when going to the basket and finishing through contact and he has a throwback mid-range game in his repertoire.
“I just try and work on my scoring package every day,” he said. “My brother pushes me the most and I just keep working and go out there and have fun.”
As for what he’s working on the most, Townes mentioned he needs to become a more consistent rebounder and defender on a game-by-game basis.
“I’m a good rebounder and defender,” he said. “I need to make sure to show that every night.”
Townes believes that he has the ability to play somewhere on the next level, whether it’s Division II or even a stop at the junior college level, and has a good idea of what he needs to do to get there.
“I just need to get stronger and faster,” he said. “I have weightlifting first period and I’m just trying to work on it. I was 140 pounds last year and now Im up to 175. That’s a big part of my game.”
