Prospect Spotlight: 2018 Jackson Stormo
SANTA BARBARA, CA.— It was a tumultuous start to the holiday season for senior Jackson Stormo and his San Marcos basketball team as they had to endure a couple of weeks of blazing fires. “It was tough. We had a week where we couldn’t practice at our school so we had to travel up to San Luis Obispo—it definitely set us back some as a team,” explains Stormo.
Fast forward to The Classic at Damien, that difficult time didn’t seem to affect the all-around play of the burly 6-foot-8 senior. Stormo was a force to be reckoned with despite his team struggling to scratch out a victory in a very difficult bracket at this event.
Stormo could receive Division 1 interest before his senior season ends.Stormo is a throwback you might say as he likes to do most of his damage on the block—and he is quite good at it as well. He seals well on the post, has excellent footwork and timing, and he can score over either shoulder. He has a nice face-up (rip through) move where he uses his strong frame to finish through contact. “I definitely feel the strength of my game is playing with my back to the basket. That’s where I feel most comfortable right now,” notes Stormo.
He is averaging a solid 18ppg and 12 rpg through 21 games and he’s been very efficient as well. In this day and age where many Center-types are stretching the floor, Stormo understands that he needs to expand his game to garner more recruiting interest.
“I want to continue to expand my skill set. Being able to stretch the floor and knock in jump shots will definitely help my progression going forward in college,” explains Stormo.
At this stage, he has a couple of DII schools in Southern California that are in contact with him, but that list should expand due to the attributes he brings to the table. With his frame, excellent timing, polished footwork, and soft hands, it would not surprise me if a Division 1 school puts their name in the recruiting pile for the throwback “big” from Santa Barbara.
