Player of the Week – Week 6
This week was a busy one for most of the Commonwealth’s teams. Several teams played 3 games to start the new year. Several players put up big numbers while earning wins for their schools. Here is a look at the nominees for Player of the Week for this week:
MeKell Burries (Newport) – The senior is committed to play at Pikeville next season and is having a great year for Coach Snapp’s Wildcats. Last week, he led his team to a 42 point win and a 35 point win. Burries had 21 points on 8/9 shooting against Augusta and 19 points and 7 rebounds in the win over Highlands.
KyKy Tandy (University Heights) – The Junior is one of the premier players in the state, regardless of class. Tandy went for 40 points in the win over Madisonville, 25 points in the win over Southwestern and lead UHA to a third win of the week over Murray. Tandy is currently near the tops in the state at 33 points per game.
JJ Reed (Paducah Tilghman) – One of the top remaining unsigned seniors in Kentucky, Reed had a big week for the Blue Tornadoes. Reed had 13 points on 6/8 shooting in very limited action of a blowout win over St. Mary and then had a monster game with 36 points and 14 rebounds on the road at Christian County. JJ shot an impressive 12/16 from the field including 2/2 from 3.
CJ Fredrick (Covington Catholic) – Fredrick led the Colonels to 3 double digit wins this week. CJ went for 23, 23 and 27 in the 3 games and was 10/25 (40%) from 3 for the week. The Iowa signee is now averaging nearly 22 points per game and shooting 41% from 3 for the season.
Andrew Taylor (Corbin) – The future Furman point guard led the Red Hounds to 3 wins last week. Taylor scored 22 points and grabbed 7 rebounds against Clay County. He followed that up with 40 points and 10 rebounds against Williamsburg then had 38 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists in Saturday’s win over Pendleton County.
