Scouting Report: Tulsa Memorial
Prep Hoops Oklahoma got a great look at the Tulsa Memorial Chargers this past weekend at the Elite 14 Showcase in Texas. They went 3-0 making it look easy at times on the court. In this article, we break down the highs and lows of the Chargers heading into the season.
High’s
–Kalib Boone is growing up before our eyes. He was big time on the boards and has really shown great improvement on the offensive end.
-There will not be another team in the state that can match Tulsa Memorial’s length.
-The rich get richer. Tulsa Memorial has tons of young talent coming up. The well is not going dry anytime soon.
–Keylan Boone showed positive signs on the Wing for the Chargers. He looks to be one of the top scorers on the team.
-The guards who don’t have a ton of experience seemed to step in and immediately produce.
-This group looks fearless.
Low’s
-The Chargers are very young and will be relying on players that have not had this level of pressure before.
-There were times where they got a little out of control with the ball. They did settle down as the day went along.
-Youthful mistakes
What to keep an eye on moving forward?
The biggest thing to watch is how this young team works through adversity when it strikes this season. At some point, the Chargers will come face to face with a tough situation during a game. Tulsa Memorial is very young at the Guard spot especially with the graduation of standouts Caleb Nero and Kobe Rose. The player with the most returning minutes is senior Point Guard Shemar Walker. Walker showed his leadership on Saturday with his play on the court, that will need to continue throughout the season. There are many Guards that will see the floor that has yet to be tested. If the Elite 14 was any indicator of how they will perform throughout this season then Tulsa Memorial has nothing to worry about they will be adding another Gold Ball to the trophy case. The opening game against Lancaster, Tulsa Memorial fell behind by a good amount but battled back to win the game. It was a very valiant effort.
Keep an eye on how this group responds throughout the season. Especially at the Guard spots. The Chargers are loaded with talent and will enter the season the #3 ranked team in Class 5A.
Head Coach Bobby Allison
What were your overall thoughts on how the Elite 14 went?
“We learned that we can take a punch and had no quit. We also learned that there is a lot to get better on both sides of the ball that will help us grow our team.”
