Prospect Spotlight: Harry Gilstrap (2018)
If you look up the word scorer in a dictionary, you might find the name Harry Gilstrap.
That’s because he is one of the best scorers in the state. The 6-foot-4 point guard averaged 17.7 points and 5 rebounds per game for Bath last season. This season, Gilstrap’s goal is to lead the state in scoring and average over 10 rebounds per game, while leading Bath to a Class C title.
“I’m basically a walking bucket. I’m really good at shooting and finishing, but a few things I’m still working on are defense, getting to the free throw line and taking good shots,” Gilstrap said.
Gilstrap is rated as Prep Hoops’ No. 101 overall prospect in the state of Michigan for the class of 2018, but don’t tell him that. He believes that he is a top 40 player in the state, and he might have a case. His game hasn’t gone unnoticed, as a few schools have shown interest, but Gilstrap believes he can take his game to another level.
“Recruiting has been going really well,” Gilstrap said. “I should be getting an offer in writing from Concordia and Davenport soon, and I have a walk on offer from Northwood. I’ve visited Northwood, Concordia, Cornerstone and Davenport, but I plan on visiting Saginaw Valley State later this month. I’m looking for a school that feels like home and that I really enjoy.”
Gilstrap is one of those players that teams plan for but still can’t contain. He plays really well without the ball, but can also break down a defender and get to the basket. He has a scorers mentality and doesn’t care who is trying to stop him. His main focus is to put his team in the best position to win.
“I think I’m one of the best scorers in the state, and I think after this season a lot of people are going to realize that,” Gilstrap said.
His game has progressed a lot over the years, and he credits watching guys like Kyrie Irving and James Harden for his growth. He likes the way they are able to contribute to their teams in a variety of ways.
Bath finished 10-13 overall and 6-9 in conference last season, but Gilstrap is determined to take his team to the Class C title. With Gilstrap and others returning, Bath should take steps forward and compete for the Central Michigan Athletic Conference title. Their path to the title begins when they open the season on Dec. 7 against Beal City.
“I will be the captain, and I just want to lead this team to a state championship in a stacked Class C,” he said.
Gilstrap is one of the most underrated players in the 2018 class, and he’s only getting better. He had a good 2017 season, but he could open some eyes in 2018. Whoever lands the star guard will be getting a steal.
