Mid-Week Top Performers
Lone Peak vs. Layton
Tuesday, November 28 – Lone Peak 72 Layton 62
Layton recently pulled off an upset by beating American Fork. Thus, demonstrating that they are ready to be in the mix this upcoming season. Although they dropped this one to Lone Peak, Collin Jeppson and Truman Brown look to be a dynamic duo. Brown has shot the lights out of the basketball through the first two games while Jepsson has demonstrated more of a balanced scoring attack. Between these two, Layton will be a tough out come the state tournament.
Lone Peak got a huge effort from Chantry Ross who dropped 28 while hitting four from deep. Meanwhile, Steven Ashworth is showing the state why he is one of the top point guards in the state. His ability to create for himself and for others has made him extremely dangerous. He is currently averaging 17 points and 6 assists per game throughout the first 3 games. In this contest, he scored 14 while dishing out a game high 8 assists. Ashworth is the real deal and will be a huge part of Lone Peak’s potential title run.
Highland vs. Juan Diego
Tuesday, November 28 – Highland 46 Juan Diego 61
Elijah Shelton and Liki Makaui appear to have picked up right where they left off last season. Despite losing the game, Makaui and Shelton combined for more than half of Highlands points while Makaui shot the basketball well from deep. The score does not demonstrate accurately how close the game. A decisive 4th quarter from Juan Diego enabled them to put this one away. With that said, between Shelton and Makaui, Highland will be just fine this season.
Jason Ricketts is going to be one of the toughest players to guard in the state. His versatility makes him a monster. He is strong, physical, and length which enables him to play on the block. Further, he has a solid handle and an above average shot that gives him the ability to be on the perimeter. Pick your poison and he will do the damage. Ricketts has some teammates who are capable shooters from deep which will aid him greatly in being able to create.
Jordan vs. Pleasant Grove
Tuesday, November 28 – Jordan 57 Pleasant Grove 68
Dyson Frank, Dyson Koehler Dyson Koehler 6'7" | SF Jordan | 2020 State #289 Nation UT , and Chandler Dean played well despite the lose. Koehler and Dean’s ability to shoot the basketball from deep is huge. They are able to spread the floor which will give Frank more time to operate on the block. Over time, this team has the pieces to be solid. Frank is going to continue to improve and carve out a bigger role with this group.
Pleasant Grove knocked off a tough Jordan team. Although it is early in the season, this win says quite a bit about the projection of this group. Matt Van Komen played extremely well in the win while pouring in 21 points. One of the biggest questions in regards to this team is their role players. Van Komen is going to be able to score, but will need help from others. With that said, Casey Brown was huge with 19 points and 4 threes.
