Jim Harris Tournament of Champions: Top Performers
HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA—The Jim Harris Tournament of Champions doesn’t have the elite teams and prospects of years past, but it does have a high-level hospitality room and a plethora of kids who could play at some level of college basketball.
Francisco’s Finest: Top Performers
Jakob Alamudun (Marina)
2019, WF, 6-foot-4, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: The biggest surprise of the tournament has to be Mr. Alamudun. He is a beastly wing-type who rebounds well in and out of his area and he has a knack to get to the rim. He excels in transition attacking the rim and he can knock in the deep jump shot. However, his strength is his ability to make plays in the paint due to his high-level motor and instincts.
Jacob Eyman (Los Alamitos)
2018, PF, 6-foot-8, 215 pounds
Joel’s Take: The UTEP commit—who may be back on the market come spring due to Tim Floyd’s resignation at UTEP—has a terrific frame, good hands, and a lot of potential. He is one of the better shot blockers in So-Cal and he’s a good athlete. He needs to play with more of an urgency (rebounding), but the talent is there to be a solid Division 1 contributor.
Cade Ortiz (Huntington Beach)
2018, SG, 6-foot-4, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: In his match up with Pacifica Christian’s Dominick Harris, Ortiz came out on top due to his relentless approach. Ortiz attacked defenders off the dribble and nailed deep 3-point shots. Due to his motor and skill set he could play somewhere at the next level.
Wony’a Singleton (Peninsula)
2019, PG, 5-foot-10, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: Singleton led his team to victory over Los Alamitos with a clutch 4th quarter performance. He hit a number of free throws down the stretch and managed the offense with aplomb. He can hit the 3-point shot and he’s quite potent in a pick and roll situation. He needs to improve his finishing skills in the paint over length and het his legs into his shot consistently, but he is a definite college prospect.
Dean Keeler (Marina)
2019, PF, 6-foot-9, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: The willowy 4-man needs to add considerable strength as well as some skill work, but he has very long arms, soft hands, and quick feet. He keeps the ball high while passing and finishing in the paint and he shows a good touch. A definite sleeper right here.
Atin Wright (Lakewood)
2020, SG, 6-foot, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: Under the outstanding tutelage of Head Coach Duane Cooper (former USC Standout), Wright should have chance of taking his abilities to the next level. The current sophomore can score at all three levels (rim attacker/mid-range pull-ups/3-point stroke).
Jim Harris TOC Notebook
* Los Alamitos’ 5-foot-10 junior Micguire Monson drained some deep jump shots and exhibited a high motor at both ends. He is the son of Long Beach State Head Coach Dan Monson.
* JD Plough, a 6-foot-2 sophomore out of Peninsula was a bit overshadowed by the clutch play of teammate Wony’a Singleton. However, due to Plough’s moxie and scoring prowess (dropped in 20-points), the young prospect definitely left his stamp on the game.
* Ocean View High School received fine performances in their blowout win over Lakewood. Their terrific senior trio of 6-foot-9 Mehkil Harvey (rebounder/rim protector), 6-foot-2 Paul Head (shooter/facilitator) and 6-foot-3 Seth Mishler (scorer/glue-type) was too tough to deal with for the Lancers.
