Taft/Dorsey Fall Showcase: Top 2018 Standouts
Taft/Dorsey Fall Showcase: Top 2018 Standouts
BALDWIN HILLS, CA.—As the season quickly approaches, Devin Ugland and I found time to venture out to Dorsey High School to take in the talents of various prospects in the 1st Annual Taft/Dorsey Fall Showcase. Derrick Taylor and Dorsey AP Luther Waters did an outstanding job of hosting and the games were quite intriguing as well
Francisco’s Standouts (Class of 2018)
Wayne Arnold (Compton/Dominguez)
SG, 6-foot-3, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: Will be interesting to see how his frame fills out when he gets introduced to a college weight program at Cal State Fullerton. The sinewy scoring guard has a prolific jump shot and he is getting much slicker with the ball in his hands while attacking.
David Singleton (Torrance/Bishop Montgomery)
SG, 6-foot-5, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: Singleton, who will sign with UCLA in a few weeks, was on a mission against Dominguez as he scored in every conceivable way imaginable. The chiseled wing knocked in some 3s, but it was his relentless attacking off the dribble and finishing in the paint that was impressive.
Scooter Smith (Inglewood HS)
SG, 6-foot-2, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: Smith was an unstoppable scorer at this event, especially in the mid-range area. He utilized his length and scoring savvy to drop in bucket after bucket. His pull-ups in traffic, and slashing drives were impressive as was his 3-point jump shot. On this Inglewood team, look for Smith to have multiple 25+ point games this season.
Tevian Jones (Culver City HS)
WF, 6-foot-6, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: Jones had a productive afternoon knocking in a few deep jump shots and attacking off the dribble as well. Offensively, he has a solid burst off the dribble, but he needs to improve his ability to beat defenders off the dribble consistently and find his teammates for easy looks. Defensively, he has long arms and overall great length to be a lock-down defender if he puts his mind to it.
Kihei Clark (Woodland Hills/Taft)
PG, 5-foot-8, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: The Virginia commit will follow in the footsteps of former So-Cal standout London Perrantes who starred for the Cavaliers before heading to the NBA. Clark has improved his strength to finish plays in the paint and he possesses a clever handle to keep defenders off balance. His jump shot was a bit inconsistent, but he did nail a few 3-pointers.
